Northern California Modified Association joined another round of the Central Valley Shoot out at Chowchilla Speedway. Heat one had six modified sprinters on the track. Jim Janssen died on the last lap losing his transmission for the evening. Heat two and three had six sprinters start and six finish. The trophy Dash consisted of the two top finishers in the heats competing. Six sprints-six laps. Scott Holloway had carburetion problems and left on lap 2. NCMA had Dan Gonderman in his C.S.Marine Const. machine come in first, Sam Fries RJB Engine Development sprinter fourth and Ed Amador's J&J Toste Farms machine in fifth.
The 20 lap main started with George Terry's MTFX Graphics sprinter on the pole position, Kent Bickford on the outside, Scott Holloway in Dave Jensen's TBS Couriers machine third, Ed Amador fourth and John Buchallato rounding out the top five. Lap two had E. Amador tangle with Bickford in front of the flag stand , catching up Earl Bouchant in the melee bring out the red flag. At the restart, Sam Fries was able to take the lead on lap four with George Terry nipping at his heels. Buchallato running third, Holloway, fourth, and Dan Gonderman holding fifth. Doug Gandy left the track on lap nine with motor problems. Sam Fries is still leading the pack. Jim Meyers spun out on lap 16 causing a yellow. Lap 17 had another yellow with Terry spinning in turn 2. Lap 18 had Meyers out and Gonderman leave the track with a broken shock. There was a two lap shootout, with Fries holding the lead, John Buchallato, second, Scott Holloway, third, Steven Ledbetter fourth and Keith Shippard, fifth.
This was an exceptionally sweet win for Fries. It was his first win in a sprinter, his 44th win in all of his years of racing. Because of a conflict, Fries took the number 29 for his car which was the last car number his racing father ever used. His dad passed away from cancer and was not able to see Fries who was "snuck" in under the fence and driving before he was old enough to be in the pits
