CONCORD, N.C. (Sept. 13, 2003) - Steve Lucas emerged from a torrid battle with Earl Pearson Jr. to win the 40-lap Golden Corral Dirt Late Model Championship Saturday night at The Dirt Track @ Lowe's Motor Speedway.

Lucas started third in the O'Reilly Southern All Star Racing Series-sanctioned event and used a lapped car as a pick to pass Pearson for the point on lap 22. Lucas was able to fend off numerous challenges from Pearson over the final laps as the Charleston, W.Va., driver claimed the $10,000 first prize.

"That lapped traffic was tough," said Lucas. "I just tried to weed my way through them the best I could. I knew I had to take a few chances because Pearson was fast.

"I'm just tickled to death. When I came in here today and looked at this place, I thought man this would be a great place to win."

Pearson Jr., who started eighth in the 32-car field, settled for the $5,000 runner-up prize. "I got behind that one lapped car and he bogged down coming off of turn two," the Jacksonville, Fla., driver explained. "Steve stayed on the bottom during those final laps and I didn't have anything for him unless he messed up."

Skip Arp started fifth and finished third with 10th-starting Jeff Smith charging to fourth at the checkered flag. Clint Smith worked his way up from the 11th starting spot to finish fifth.

Ricky Weeks, Mike Duvall, Donnie Moran, Ed Basey and Larry Blankenship rounded out the top 10. The most serious incident of the 40-lap finale came on lap 18 when Chris Madden made contact with the turn-two wall and flipped. Madden, the 2001 winner of the Golden Corral Dirt Late Model Championship, walked away from the accident, but was later transported to NorthEast Medical Center for further evaluation after complaining of neck and back pain.

The eight-lap late model heat races were won by Lucas, Arp, Duvall, Weeks, Moran and Madden. Jeremy Clements and Dennis Franklin were victorious in the eight-lap last chance races.

Dale Joyce was the surprise winner of the 15-lap feature for the 600 Racing Legends Cars. Jason Rochelle dominated the event and appeared en route to an easy victory when he spun in the second turn of the final lap, handing the victory to Joyce. Dale Rauzi claimed runner-up honors with Wes Burton third.

The Dirt Track @ Lowe's Motor Speedway returns to action Wednesday night, Oct. 8, with the Charlotte Dirt Doubleheader Nationals. The inaugural event, run in conjunction with the UAW-GM Quality 500 NASCAR Winston Cup race, features the Charlotte debut of the United States Auto Club sprint cars and a return visit by the O'Reilly Southern All Star late models.

Tickets can be obtained online at www.lowesmotorspeedway.com or by calling 1-800-455-FANS. The event is expected to be sold out and fans are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance.
