July 6, 1996 "Hawkeye Downs 300" Finished: WON!!! Started: 5th 18.888 (95.299 mph)

A champion can remain calm, cool and collected to overcome adversity; Bob Senneker posses all those qualities and because of that he now possess another ASA trophy for his mantle. Senneker captured his 81st career ASA victory, Saturday afternoon in front of a huge Cedar Rapids crowd and an even larger crowd on TNN, as the race was televised LIVE. Bob started in the 5th position, but on lap 9 he began to fall back when his motor started to miss, it was assumed a plug wire had come off and he maintained his speed while waiting for a caution. The first caution flew at lap 43, Senneker came to the aid of his crew and they fixed the plug wire. He rejoined the field in 23rd position, at the lap 80 mark he was in 19th. When the 2nd caution flew at lap 97, Bob pitted for right side tires and was running 14th. He had worked himself into the top 10 at lap 140, when the 5th caution of the day flew at lap 158, Bob came into change left side rubber and was running 15th, when he returned to the track. Bob continued to work his way to the front and at lap 200 passed Scott Hansen for the lead and led the rest of the way for the victory, he won by a 4.676 margin. On it being a hot day Senneker said, "I shouldn't outlast these young guys, but the car drove so easy, and the motor ran so good. The car didn't feel that great but Hal (spotter) kept telling me that we were as fast the leaders were, maybe a little faster. I could not run on the outside and pass, but alone I could run along the bottom real good. Our sponsors Lane Automotive, JR Automation, Mr. Gasket were happy for them, our engine builder Kinetics; did a heck of a job on the motor." On the plug wire coming off..."10 laps in I thought we might lost a cylinder, it wasn't smoking, I picked up the pace and the crew did a heck of a job not to lose a lap. After the last stop, we got the stagger right and the Goodyears really hooked up, It shouldn't be this easy." Bob jumped from 8th to 5th in ASA points, the next ASA race is July 20 at Jennerstown Speedway in Jennerstown, PA; where Senneker won both races in 1995. The "Jennerstown 250" will be telecast nationally on TNN starting at 2 pm (EDT). The ASA cars have visited the only paved track in Iowa three times, Senneker has 2 wins and a second place finish. In 1994 he finished 2nd to Steve Holzhausen, 1995 he won the event when the leaders crashed with 5 laps to go while running third and or course in 1996 the "Bluebird" led the most laps; the last 100 to capture win #81.
