CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - The American Speed Association traveled to Cedar Rapids, Iowa for the 5th race of the 2001 season on April 28th. After a run of bad luck, Johnny Sauter and the A.P. Performance Racing team were ready to turn their season around in Iowa.

Sauter started off the weekend by qualifying on the pole position, turning a lap of 18.711 sec (96.200 mph) around the half mile oval. The pole became Johnny's third pole in only seven starts with A.P. Performance Racing.

"We were fast all through the practice sessions and I thought we'd have a good chance at the pole," commented Johnny.

Throughout the race, Sauter proved to be the dominant force, leading a total of 233 laps. Johnny relinquished the lead on lap 62 when he got loose in turn 4, but went back to the point on lap 130 after a great pit stop by the A.P. Performance crew. Sauter would remain in the lead until he took the checkered flag.

"I can't say enough about my crew and my car owner Alec Pinsonneault," noted an ecstatic Johnny Sauter. "This is my first win and our first win as a team. Everyone did an excellent job today and this is just a the beginning of the success I think this team is capable of."

The win boosted the #9 team to a solid 10th in the overall point standings and 3rd in the Pat Schauer Memorial Rookie of the Year race, just 36 points behind rookie leader Chris Wimmer.

Johnny became the fourth member of the Sauter family to win an American Speed Association event, joining his father Jim and brothers Jay and Tim.

The American Speed Association will host it's next race on Sunday, May 6th at Montgomery Speedway, Montgomery Alabama. The race will be televised live on TNN at 1:00pm EST.
