Rick Johnson Claims 8th, Rookie Title In Sight
Cedar Rapids, IA - Rick Johnson ran a consistent race and recorded a strong 8th place finish at Hawkeye Downs Speedway and remains the top rookie in the 1999 Pat Schauer Memorial Rookie of the Year Challenge in ASA. The #22 Nationwide Auction Systems Monte Carlo qualified in the 9th starting position. Johnson was involved in one minor spin, but rebounded to secure his 12th top 10 finish this season in the next to last event on the 1999 American Speed Association (ASA) ACDelco Challenge Series schedule.
The 8th-place finish earned Johnson 150 points, giving him 2,731 points for the season. Johnson maintains top rookie honors, with an 8th place positioning in the ASA ACDelco Challenge Series National Points standings. Johnson increased his lead in the 1999 ASA Pat Schauer Memorial Rookie-of-the-Year award and is now 149 points ahead of his nearest competitor. Going into the last event of the season, Johnson has to start the event at Orange County Speedway to claim the 1999 Rookie-of-the Year Title.
"The Nationwide Auction Systems car ran great. There were a lot of incidents out there and I'm glad we were able to steer clear of them. The rookie title is pretty much ours, but we still have to go to Orange County with our usual game plan, run up front and try to win," Rick said.
Herzog Motorsports co-owner, Stan Herzog, was delighted about Rick's finish. "Rick ran a superb race. He ran the Nationwide Auction Systems car up front and captured another top-10 finish. We have one race to go before we can claim Rookie of the Year honors, but we're very optimistic."
