Uxbridge driver wins Round 2 of Ontario Pro Challenge Series
SAUBLE BEACH, ONTARIO - CARSTAR Monte Carlo driver Russ Bond went flag-to-flag to win the 20-lap feature Ontario Pro Challenge Series race at Sauble Beach on Saturday night. "It was a great fight - just look at the sides of my CARSTAR/Dupont Monte Carlo," Bond said. "Twice tonight, Thane [Woodside] and I have several laps side-by-side. It was great racing. I am happy to get our first win of the year for CARSTAR, Dupont, Impact Racing, Mobil1 and Inside Track Motorsport News."
Bond started the night with two fourth place finishes in the heats, and the pill inversion gave him the pole for the feature. "Mark Jonak and Mike Goodyear worked hard to get the car better each session. We learned a lot at Sunset, and we learned more about the CARSTAR Monte Carlo tonight."
Second in the feature was the #02 DriveFit, Young Drivers of Canada Ford Taurus of Dennis Thomson. Thomson had a heat win, and the inversion saw him start fourth in the feature. By lap 12, he had made it to the rear bumper of Bond's car. "Russ was good. He left some little openings in the final laps, and I had a shot at him, but I just couldn't make it stick. It is still a good points finish for the DriveFit, Young Drivers of Canada Ford Taurus." Thomson leads the points with 130.
Third in the feature was Kevin Crowhurst, in his #53 O'Connor's Distribution Inc. Intrepid. Crowhurst had an up and down night with a seventh in the first heat, then a second in the second heat. With his third in the feature, Crowhurst maintains his second place in the point's championship with 114 points.
Fourth in the final was Steve Lyons. Lyons was filling in for the ailing Josh Nicholson in the #66 NU-GRO Wipe Out Dodge. "It was a very exciting night," Lyons said. "These are great cars. Thanks to Ken and Kathy Nicholson for letting me fill in for Josh."
Woodside brought home his #5 Melitta Canada Monte Carlo in fifth, after an intense early race battle with Bond. "It was fun," Woodside said of the early laps. "I thought I had him once, but he came back. It was a good, clean fight." Woodside, who won the first heat race, keeps his third place in the championship with 112 points.
Ken Nicholson brought his #99 International Truck and Engine Pontiac home in sixth. He was followed by Tim Norris in the #88 Dodge Intrepid in seventh and Danielle Wilson was eighth in her #21 Da-Light Systemsearch Monte Carlo.
Round 3 of the Ontario Pro Challenge Series is this Saturday, May 5th at Mosport Speedway.
