SS Racing will put three-time champ in car at Michigan.
PENDLETON, IN (May 23, 2002) -- SS Racing has announced the addition of three-time ASA National Champion Butch Miller to its American Speed Association (ASA) stock car team for the 2002 season. Miller, who joins first-year driver Chris Shultz on the Indiana polis-based SS Racing team, tested the #04 ASILimited car at Indianapolis Raceway Park on May 21-22.
Miller will pilot the #04 ASILimited car in the Tires.com 300, presented by BFGoodrich Tires at Berlin Raceway in Marne, Mich., on June 1, 2002. When ASA last visited Berlin Raceway, which is the Coopersville, Mich., native's home track, Miller won the 200 1 version of the Tires.com 300 on July 14, 2001.
During his lengthy ASA career, Miller has led 10,145 laps (fifth on the all-time list) and has tallied 43 pole positions (third on the all-time list) and 43 victories (also third on the all-time list).
"I am excited to have a driver of Butch's caliber on our team. This will send a message that we are committed to put the #04 ASILimited Monte Carlo up front," said Ken Smith, President of ASILimited and team owner. "We have struggled recently while our fir st-year driver Chris Shultz gained needed experience. This addition will take the pressure off Chris and allow him to grow with the mentoring of Butch. Our main focus is the progression of the TEAM."
Miller raced full time during the 2001 ASA season, finishing third in points while amassing six poles and one victory. "I am here because of the quality of the equipment and the structure of this young team," said Butch Miller. "After my sponsorship deal f ell through last year, I didn't think an opportunity like this would come along. I want to help this young team grow and I will help in any way to have them succeed."
ASA will wave the green flag for the sixth time during the 2002 season at the Tires.com 300, presented by BFGoodrich Tires at Berlin Raceway on June 1, 2002 at 9 p.m. (Eastern). This race will be telecast on a same-day tape delayed basis on The National Ne twork (TNN) at midnight.
