Millington, TN. (August 26, 2002)-- Veteran Butch Miller qualified the # 04 ASILIMITED Monte Carlo entry 2nd on the grid missing the pole by .007 of a second.
The #04 ASILIMITED Monte Carlo was in contention from the onset. Through the 1st 60 laps Butch kept the car within the top 4 positions. Pit strategy would be key in this race. Crew chief Deon Deneau and the team had made a decision that during any yellow that would fall within the"fuel window" (a point within the race that you need to get to so you can take enough fuel to finish the race) the team would pit and take (4) tires. Doing this early would set the #04 ASILIMITED Monte Carlo deep in the field, however, when all other lead lap cars would pit, we would take the lead of the race.
This strategy scripted perfectly and on lap 111 #04 ASILIMITED Monte Carlo took the lead. This lead was not challenged until the #30 car came under Butch on lap 123 between turns 1 and 2. Racing side by side through the backstretch and into turn 3, there was no give. In the middle of turns 3 and 4, the #30 got loose and slid into the #04 ASILIMITED Monte Carlo and caused serious damage to the front end. After multiple pit stops to repair the front end, the #04 returned to the track without a hood and in 18th position and on the lead lap.
"It is unfortunate that something like this happened" says Butch Miller. "We worked real hard today to get up front and I am disappointed that this happened, but this is racing and we will get them next time"
With some late lap carnage the #04 ASILIMITED Monte Carlo was able to climb to a 9th place finish. Team owner Ken smith adds" Another consistent finish for this team. With all the damage and still get a Top Ten I am very pleased.
Butch Miller and the #04 ASILIMITED Monte Carlo has moved within 20 points of 16th position in the Owner Standings in just 8 starts out of the 15 races fielded by ASA. Current statistics for 8 races this year are 4 poles, 3 wins, 3 top 5s and 2 top 10's.
The 2002 ASA Racing Series is next in action on Monday, September 2, for the annual Labor Day Miller Lite 300 at the Minnesota State Fair Speedway in St. Paul (MN). The race will take the green flag just after 2 p.m. (Central).
