SHEPPARD BEATS RAIN AND THE COMPETITION AT BREWERTON SPEEDWAY ON OSWEGO ASPHALT NIGHT
BREWERTON, NY...Matt Sheppard beat out the rain and the talented Brewerton Speedway DIRT Big Block Modified field in the 35-lap main event last Friday on Oswego Asphalt Night. Sheppard survived a rain delay and then held off Billy Decker and Tim Fuller to win his second event of the season at the D-shaped DIRT Demon. The victory for the Ross Motorsports team was worth $2,000.
Sean Beardsley and Tony Buffa started on the front row in the Oswego Asphalt DIRT Big Block Modified feature. Beardsley led the opening circuit, but the lead duo tangled in the first turn at the completion of the first circuit. Scott Prentice inherited the lead at this point. After five circuits the local Central Square, N.Y. driver was being followed in the top five by Sheppard, Chuck Bower, Ryan Phelps and Billy Decker.
Sheppard took the top spot away from Prentice on lap six. Shortly after a light drizzle started to fall. The moisture started to fall heavier and the event was stopped on lap-17 with several cars loosing traction on the slick track. After a brief rain delay the cars returned to the track and the event was restarted. One lap after the restart Sheppard was being followed in the top five by Decker, Bower, Tim Fuller and Alan Johnson.
Decker took the top spot away from Sheppard on lap-28. The battle for the lead was now an outstanding three car show between Decker, Sheppard and Fuller. On lap-30 Sheppard took the top spot back from Decker. Decker came right back to lead the field on lap-31, but Sheppard returned the favor and led lap-32. Fuller moved into the second position on lap-34. The lead trio raced three wide for the feature victory in another Brewerton Speedway epic DIRT Big Block Modified battle. Sheppard came out on top in this affair with Fuller making a late race charge to finish second. Decker, Bower and Pat Ward completed the top five feature finishers. Johnson, Gary Tomkins, Dale Planck, Jim Witko and Vic Coffey finished in positions sixth through tenth respectively.
Dan Williams won his third 20-lap Mod Lite feature race of the 2005 season last Friday night. Darren Forbes, Frank Doll Jr., Joe Abbass and Ken Gamlen finished in positions second through fifth respectively. Williams took the top spot away from Forbes on lap seven and then held him off to earn the victory over the 30-car starting field of competitors.
The remaining IMCA Modified, Four Cylinder Super Stock and Four Cylinder Enduro features were rained-out. The IMCA Modifieds and Four Cylinder Super Stocks will compete in double features this Friday, August 26. The Four Cylinder Enduro racers will have double features on Friday, September 2.
Action will continue this Friday at Brewerton Speedway with the DIRT Big Block Modifieds competing in a 35-lap feature.
