Brent Downey Making First Appearance in Thanksgiving Classic
Salem, IN (November 14, 2001) – Brent Downey has been piloting the blue number 25 Chevrolets in the Kendall Late Model Series for the past two seasons and will make his first appearance in the 4th Annual Bailey’s Thanksgiving Classic at Southern National Speedway on November 25. This event is one of the traditional season ending premier late model shows, paying $7,500 to the winner of the 200-lap race.
“I’m real excited about racing in the Thanksgiving Classic next weekend at Southern National, “ said Brent Downey. “We are going to have some fun and see what we can do. Scott Hantz has been a big help with giving us some information on setup.”
Southern National Speedway is a .400-mile oval located in Kenly, North Carolina, which has been described as a combination of Anderson and Angola speedways. Downey has scored some of his best finishes in the series at Anderson Speedway with a fourth last season at the quarter-mile on Labor Day as a career best.
In 2001, Brent finished eighth in the standings and produced four top-ten finishes. His best finish was at Winchester Speedway taking fifth place honors after starting the 100-lapper in the 20th position. Downey has backing from Phoenix Fabricators & Erectors, Matco Tools, Crow Seat Belts and Porter Master.
“Overall we’re pleased with our 2001 season. We learned a lot about the cars that our finishes don’t necessarily show, but this knowledge will be a huge help next year. It’s a lot of fun to work with your family on a race team and I’m excited about our chance to finish in the top five in points next season!”
Brent began his career in the quarter midget ranks and has notched close to 400 victories. The 19-year old driver competed in legends in 1999 claiming both the National Championship and Anderson Speedway title. In 2000, Brent competed in his first season in a late model and finished 10th in the KLMS.
Brent Downey and Downey Racing will be competing in the 4th Annual Bailey’s Thanksgiving Classic at Southern National Speedway from November 23-25. On Friday, November 23, there will be practice available from 12-5 with qualifying taking place on Saturday. On Sunday, the 200-lap late model event will take center stage at the .400-mile North Carolina oval.
