BLOOMINGTON, IN (September 21, 2003) - Saturday night's show was the final program of a great season at Bloomington Speedway. Immediately following qualifications, the top ten in points for each division assembled at the front of the grandstand to sign autographs and receive the awards for their season's performance. Thanks to the support of our sponsors, our year end points payouts and contingency awards totaled over $23,300 this season. Bloomington Speedway appreciates the loyalty of their competitors; and they are pleased to be able to reward it in this way.

O'Neal Wood Products Modified Awards:

In his third season of competition in the O'Neal Wood Products Modified division, Shelby Miles won his first championship. Miles has methodically improved his performance each season. He finished 7th in 2001 (his rookie season) and 5th last year. Miles picked up his first feature win a week ago; but he missed the top ten only twice all season. Miles' mount is not only fast every week; but it always looks good. Sponsors can certainly be proud to have their name on the Miles machine.

Jeff Bland, Jr. is still in middle school and is too young to drive on the street; but it is obvious that he is more than capable of driving on the red clay. He missed the feature only once all season; and he had only two shows when he failed to finish in the top ten. It's easy to understand how he won Rookie of the Year honors in addition to finishing second in the points.

Clint DeMoss turned in another solid season in finishing third in the points. The same could be said of fourth place finisher Brady Short.

Matt Boknecht ran into bad luck a couple of weeks this season; and he had to settle for fifth place. Jesse Cramer, Matt Bex, J.P. Karpowicz, Rodney Harris, Jr., and Lee Hobbs rounded out the top ten.

J.P. Karpowicz was named the Most Improved modified racer for his 8th place performance. J.P. drives past countless modified tracks each week as he tows from his home in Lancaster, Ky. To compete at Bloomington Speedway. He appreciates the careful track preparation and the level of competition at Bloomington.

Tire & Wheel Center Super Stock Awards:

It's hard to imagine a more popular champion than this years Tire & Wheel Center Super Stock champion. Jack Frye has raced for more than twenty years; and he has never won a feature much less a championship. All of us at Bloomington Speedway were amazed to learn this. We could all remember great races that he had run and very nearly won. Nobody has ever deserved their Most Improved title any more than Frye. He plans to return next season to defend his championship and pick up a couple of feature wins too.

Greg Kendall battled hard all season to repeat as champion. He made every feature; but a few poor performances late in the season (primarily due to flat tires) knocked him out of the championship lead. While Kendall was disappointed by not repeating as champion, he felt good about his effort and the soundness of his operation. He believes that they will be able to close the deal again next season.

Danny Harris, Ben DuBois, Mel Bigham, Lee Hobbs, Anthony Walker, Ralph Groomer, Chris Deweese, and Mike Jones rounded out the top ten.

Anthony Walker received Rookie of the Year honors for the Tire & Wheel Center Super Stock division.

Tire & Wheel Center Super Stocks:

A total of 46 Tire & Wheel Center Super Stocks unloaded to compete for the cash that was up for grabs for this year end show. In addition to a larger purse, sponsors kicked in with lap prize money for every lap of both features.

When the green flag waved to start the Tire & Wheel Center Super Stock feature compeition, Mike Fields took the lead from his pole starting position. Randy Moore was on his tail; and he was there to take the point when, on the 23rd circuit, Fields tangled with Chris Hillman and Jay Deckard. All three of the combatants were done for the evening. Mike Cawood stayed with Moore; but he would have to settle for second place trailed by Greg Kendall and Terry Arthur.

Danny Harris earned hard charger honors by starting in 16th place and driving to a strong fifth place finish.

Mike Vest, Joe Godsey, Troy Clark, Ben DuBois, and Tom Plotz rounded out the top ten.

In preliminary action, Mike Fields was the fast qualifier and won the dash. Fields, Moore, Cawood, Godsey, and Todd Gilpin won the heat races while Harris and Gary Trammell won the B features.

O'Neal Wood Products Modifieds:

As might be expected, the largest field of O'Neal Wood Products Modifieds of the season showed up to compete in the last show of the season at Bloomington Speedway.. A total of 54 modifieds were divided into six heat races; and only three cars transferred from each heat.

Jesse Cramer took the lead when the green flag dropped with Earl Plessinger and John DeMoss on his tail. Plessinger took the lead on the 11th circuit; and, three laps later, John DeMoss moved into second place. On the 17th lap, DeMoss took the lead; and it looked like he would cruise to victory. However, while Plessinger and DeMoss had been battling for the lead, Kerry Norris had been making his way through the field from his 19th place starting position to contend for the lead. He had to settle for second; but DeMoss knew that he was there. DeMoss almost certainly breathed a sigh of relief when he saw the checkered flag in Rusty Nunn's hard.

This was Norris's first visit of the season to the red clay of Bloomington Speedway. In fact, last night's race was only about the third race of the season for Norris. Since his father, Dave, has retired in Florida, Kerry is running the garage full time and has much less time to race.

DeMoss also hasn't raced much this season. The early part of his season was absorbed by building a new house for his growing family. It's obvious that both of these guys are as good as ever.

Plessinger held on to finish third trailed by Jesse Cramer, Shelby Miles, Dan Hamstra, Daryl Herbert, Craig Conyer, Curtis Knieriem, and Gary Trammell.

In preliminary action, Gary Trammell had quick time while Matt Boknecht won the Dash. Craig Conyer, John DeMoss, Jesse Cramer, Matt Boknecht, Earl Plessinger, and Dan Bloem won the heat races. Norris, Travis Shoulders, and Jeff Bland, Jr. prevailed in the "B" features.
