KNOXVILLE, Iowa (Aug. 10, 2000) - The following is a summary of quotes from Team Mopar Maxim driver Mark Kinser during Thursday's Preliminary activity for the 40th annual Amoco Knoxville Nationals at Knoxville Raceway.
- Kinser picked up a series leading 12th Vivarin Fast Time Award after posting a 15.452-second lap during qualifying.
"The track was pretty fast, but the straights are really fast. We have a little bit slicker straights this year, which throws you out towards the wall during a run. As of right now, we have a really fast car and we're looking pretty good.
"Out of all the times we've qualified this year at Knoxville, the best we had done was 18th. I was a little apprehensive about my qualifying run tonight. The Mopar car worked really well. I picked up a little time by running low in turns three and four that made up for a crummy one and two.
"If anybody would have been at Williams Grove (Mechanicsburg, Pa), they would have seen that we changed everything that could have possibly been changed. Sometimes it may not even be needed because the guy in the cockpit wasn't doing his job. I might have the premier team in the United States - maybe the world - and sometimes I may let them down a little bit."
Kinser, who finished fifth, failed to transfer to the feature after the second heat when the defending Amoco Knoxville Nationals champion tangled with Aaron Berryhill in turn two.
"I saw him (Berryhill) spin, but was unable get by. I thought I could have missed him going low, but it didn't work out. We're starting on the pole for the "B" Main, so we should be in god shape."
Kinser dominated the feature leading wire-to-wire for the victory over runner-up Jac Haudenschild.
"We did what we need to do in that race. The track is a little unpredictable right now."
- Kinser, who started 22nd, took home the fifth position in the feature. Kinser earned 480 points for the effort.
"We had a pretty good run. It's really hard to come from the 22nd position and win a 20-lap race. I was almost passing a car a lap to run fifth, so it was a good showing. The Mopar Performance Parts car did a real good job. As the night went along, we had more success at putting the power to the ground. In the feature, I can't say it was the fastest car but we we're among the top five.
"When you start in the back, I had to go were a lot of people weren't. And, I actually had to sill my tires over a little bit. It was driver error because you want to be on the top or the bottom, but not in the middle. We were skating around in the middle, bit a lot of times I really had no choice."
