(Marne, MI) Mike Miller used late-race pit strategy and a fast race car to win the American Speed Association ACDelco Challenge Series "Build-A-Mold 300" in front of a capacity crowd Saturday Night at Berlin Raceway in Marne, MI.
Miller, of Marietta, GA, elected to stop for fresh right side tires on lap 217 while leading the event, handing race leadership over to Mike Garvey, who decided to stay out of the pits, choosing track position over new rubber.
Miller came out of the pits in third, behind Garvey and Greg Stewart, and a host of lapped cars. The pit stop put Miller over 7 seconds behind Garvey on the restart, but over the course of the next 40 circuits, Miller reeled in the race leader, catching Ga rvey by lap 270. Garvey was able to keep Miller at bay for the next 10 laps, using lapped traffic to maintain the lead. Miller dove to the inside of Garvey on lap 289, and powered into the lead with ten circuits remaining. Once out front, Miller cruised to a .748 second margin of victory, earning his 5th ACDelco Challenge Series victory of 1999, and the 15th of his ASA career.
Garvey, a native of nearby Muskegon, MI, held on for second, followed by Tim Sauter of Wisconsin. Middleville, MI resident Dave Sensiba placed fourth, with Bob Senneker finishing fifth in his first ASA race of the 1999 season.
The win was worth $14,530 of the $144,811 posted awards for Miller, and extended ACDelco Challenge Series championship points lead to 80 ahead of Tim Sauter, after 15 of twenty events.
The third competitive test of the LS1-V8 powered Project 2000 car saw Ted Smokstad start from the tail of the field after posting the fastest time in qualifying. He drove the car to as high as fourth in the field before withdrawing on lap 265 due to a vib ration on the left front. The LS1-V8 engine has been mandated as the powerplant for ASA in 2000.
The American Speed Association returns to action on Sunday afternoon, August 29th, at the Milwaukee Mile Speedway for the Time Warner Cable 200. The Time Warner Cable 200 will be telecast live to a national audience at 2:00 PM Eastern Time on TNN Motorspor ts.
