Bruce Alberts Wins the 2001 RE/MAX Super Stock Spring Championship

MARNE, MI The Berlin Raceway hosted another great evening of auto racing. The evenings events began with John Deere lawn tractor team event sponsored by Tailored Lawn and Turf. Howard Litaker, Jay Gipson, Kurt Meissner and Mike Sherrington won their heat events in the DTS Sportsman division, T.J Westfield and Ray Clay taking their heats in the RE/MAX Super Stock division and Brian Wiersma and Doug Vandervliet capturing the checkered in the Coors Light Late Model division.

The evening started off with the DTS Sportsman Feature. The first caution came out on lap 7 when Al Marcott suffered a flat left rear tire coming to a stop on the back stretch. On lap 9 the 2nd yellow flag came out as a result of a bad restart. There was no shortage of side by side racing as they reached the half way point in the event. Lap 15 saw a huge pile up in turn 3, involving 6 vehicles. The #13, driven by Phil Greene, won the DTS Sportsman Feature event.

The RE/MAX Super Stock Spring Championship started with #4 of Bruce Alberts on the pole. The feature stayed green until lap 23 when T.J. Westfield brought out the first caution flag. The second caution of the night came out when the #32 of Ross Meeuwsen and the #52 of Jim Idema got together in turn 4. Shortly after the green flag came back out, Matt Piersma made contact with the turn 4 wall and proceeded to slide down the front stretch wall. On lap 27, Jerry Groeneveld and Bob Bliss got together sending both cars off the track behind the turn 3 wall. The RE/MAX Super Stock feature was red flagged when power was interrupted from somewhere outside of the facility. The final yellow flag came out on the final lap making for a yellow/checkered finish. The #4 of Bruce Alberts won the 2001 Spring Super Stock Championship.

The Coors Light Late Models got off to a slippery start as the #18 of Keith Herp experienced major motor problems, dropping fluid down the front stretch as he made his way back to the pits. Almost as fast as the green flag could come out, the yellow returned again to the Berlin Raceway as the #88 of Tim Sweeney got together with another car in turn 2. Still on lap one, Randy Sweet went for a spin in turn 3 resulting in a third try to complete the first lap. The Coors Light Late Models finally saw a full green flag lap when on lap 2 the #88 of Tim Sweeney, #6 of Jerry Weavers Jr. and the #7 of Alan Fricke made contact in turn 2. On lap 4 the cars of Chad Blount, Paul Namey, Jerry Weavers, Jr. Alan Fricke and Brian Campbell were all involved in a pile up in turn 4. The #71 of Bob Holley lead at the half way point where he stayed for the remainder of the feature.

The evening was capped off with a 12 lap DTS Sportsman Consi with David Hall battling for the win.
