Berlin Raceway Releases 2002 Schedule
MARNE, MI -- NASCAR Winston Cup driver Johnny Benson will continue to show his support for his hometown track, Berlin Raceway, in 2002. Benson is scheduled to race three times next season at the track in which he claims an equity ownership stake.
The 2002 schedule was released today, and it proves to be similar to the 2001 season's schedule with just a few minor adjustments. A total of 23 dates, mostly Saturdays, fill the schedule. Opening night is Saturday, April 27, and the season extends one week longer than last season, ending on Saturday, September 21. Two test-and-tune events will be held prior to the season, on April 13 and 20.
Benson's scheduled appearances are the Open Invitational Memorial 100 Late Model Feature on Wednesday, May 8; a 75-lap Late Model Feature on Saturday, June 29 and the Chester Mysliwiec Memorial 100 Late Model Feature on Wednesday, August 14. The May 8 Open Memorial race has been condensed into one day from last season's two-day event.
The American Speed Association (ASA) series is scheduled to return on June 1, with both qualifying and the 300-lap feature race taking place on that day (condensed from a two-day event last season). The Automobile Racing Clubs of America (ARCA) series will return on July 20.
Also returning are International Super Modifieds (ISMA) on June 15, and Auto Value Super Sprints (AVSS) on June 29 and August 31.
New events on the schedule include a midget car series race in conjunction with AVSS on August 31 and a Vintage Racing Organization event in conjunction with the 52nd Anniversary race on July 27.
Three dates are scheduled for post-race fireworks displays (June 29, July 27 and August 31).
Berlin Raceway's weekly racing divisions (Late Model, Super Stock and Sportsman) will race every Saturday throughout the season (with some exceptions to allow for special events).
Rain dates have been determined and are being published as part of the schedule for fan convenience.
