To the suprise of almost no one, the final round of this years Australian Super Speedway Championship at Calder Park Thunderdome has been cancelled. In a letter sent to competitors last week obtained by the weekly television show "In Pit Lane" track promotor Bob Jane critisised drivers who "in the pastŠ did not make the effort to sell their product".

Mr Jane said that the cancellation was due to many complex issues which had crept into the sport over a period of time."

According to the letter average NASCAR fields had fallen 33% in Australia since the 92/93 season.

The letter also refuted consistant rumours that Calder Park has been brought or was for sale.

A meeting of local NASCAR drivers will take place this week at Albert Park to discuss the future of the sport in Australia.

This years championship has seen two rounds cancelled due to a lack of entries. Crowds for the sport down under have plummeted.
