(10-7-97) Racing for Championship Points at Auburndale Auburndale, FL Racing action gets back underway this Saturday night at Auburndale Speedway. After a two week layoff the drivers prepare for the final 6 events of the season and a final assault at some very tight point battles for the season championships in all divisions. The points battle in the Late Model Sportsman division shows Lakeland's Ray Cuzzone out front by 64 points over Ollie Harbin. Harbin holds a 19 point advantage over rookie challenger Tony Poff. Billy Jones is a distant fourth but has only an eleven point margin over Richard Todd. The battle for sixth and seventh is separated by only two points as Jeff McCaw holds the advantage over Thomas Poff. The Street Stock championship fight has been perhaps the most intense of all divisions. Michael King and Westley Bass have swapped the lead on several occasions and presently King holds the advantage by 46 markers. Both Bass and King have suffered mechanical woes in recent weeks and have been able to borrow a race car to keep their hopes alive. Oddly enough both borrowed the same car belonging to Jeff Warren. The large field of Street Stocks and the point leaders starting the features near the rear have made for exciting action as the point chasers scramble to get their mounts to the front of the field. David Williamson is a solid third with Robert Hight in fourth only three points ahead of Keith Schoonover. Randy Storer enjoys the largest lead of all the point leaders with 89 points over Lee Davis in the Modified Mini Stock division. Don Ezell is third with Bobby Judah fourth just 3 points ahead Jay Kaminski in fifth. The tightest point race is in the V8 Pure Stock division where James Wright holds a eight point lead over Kim Scheffler-Hays. Daniel Clough led the standings earlier in the year but after sitting out four races while building a new car is a distant third. Daniel Sasnett and Donnie Harp round out the top five. Daryl Habbershaw continues to lead the 4 Cylinder Pure Stock division points. Greg Case is second followed by Wayne Weaver. Chip Burton is fourth with Terry Jones only 10 points behind. The Dwarf cars join the regular divisions for this Saturday's racing line-up. In two weeks October 18th the Outlaw Modifieds and Baby Late Models will be on hand. The Allison Legacy cars will visit on October 25th and for Halloween, racing will shift from Saturday night to Friday night with a ladies Powder Puff event and a Halloween Costume Contest.
