Thomas Poff Dominates Late Model Action at Auburndale
Auburndale, FL -- Thomas Poff led the way to the Late Model Sportsman win Saturday night at Auburndale Speedway. The 25 lap feature took three tries to get underway with a significant incident occurring on the second attempt. After Steve Treager moved from the pole to tail of the pack following a visit to the pits, Poff moved to the point and Don Carroll moved to outside post for the second attempt. On the break Carroll's car jumped sideways in front of the field leaving no room for many to avoid his spinning car. The ensuing crash primarily involved second place pointman Ollie Harbin, Ray Cuzzone, Steve Treager, Jimmy Castleberry, John Waterman and Carroll. Cuzzone's car seemed to be the most heavily damaged car of the group after getting airborne in the incident.
The third try was successful and Poff took off from the pole and never looked back. Robbie Storer gave chase to finish second and Jimmy Castleberry recovered from the problems at the start to finish in third. David Rogers put his Pontiac into fourth at the finish with Keith Schoonover solving some of the engine problems that have plagued his number 27 for the last several weeks finishing in fifth.
Paul Hunsberger sped to the 20 lap Dwarf Car Racing Association feature win with Bobby Makuch putting on the pressure the entire way. Donald Hess Jr. advanced to the third spot with Max Howe and Bill Burback completing the top five. Only one major crash slowed the feature pace when Steve Treager and Dick Lawrence collided exiting turn four and ground to a stop in the outside retaining wall just past start/finish.
The "Only Lonely Ford" of Ron Lofquist used this evenings 25 lap Street Stock feature as a tune-up for next weeks Madi Corp. Twin 25's. After starting from the outside of row two, Lofquist quickly advanced to the front spot to lead the way to the checkers. Travis Roland worked through traffic but could not mount a challenge on the Ford to finish second. Second place pointman Westley Bass posted a third place finish followed by Larry Chumney and Paul Gibbs.
The Pinto station wagon of Donnie Ezell made it's way to victory lane to post another win for the "Grocery Getter" in the Modified Mini Stock division. Kenny Uhl slipped by Eugene Davidson for second and Marlon Lynn would also get around Davidson for third. Davidson's slide halted at fourth and Wes Plyburn posted his number 12 in fifth.
Daniel Clough demonstrated that he still knew the way to the Winners Circle after watching from the sidelines during the first two-thirds of this season. Clough paced Greg Bacon and Bob Gorsuch to the finish in the 15 lap V-8 Pure Stock feature. Wayne Weaver led the way to the payoff window in the 4 Cylinder Pure Stock feature. Billie May posted her best run of the year with a second place run followed by Mathew Craig.
