Auburndale, FL— Robert Ham drove to victory in the 25 lap Legend Cars of Florida feature Saturday night at Auburndale Speedway. The Legend Cars were lined up on the front straight early during intermission, providing the hiding spots for an Easter Egg Hunt for the kids in attendance. After the eggs were all claimed the 21 car starting field went hunting the checkered flag. Starting from outside the fourth row, Ham was able wrestle the lead away from Paul Shrein just prior to the halfway point. Ham held a ten car length advantage enroute to the win while Shrein maintained the second spot, finishing just ahead of Ham's teammate Jimmy Walker. Completing the top five were Doug Longwell and Eddie Lepine.
The 25 lap Late Model Sportsman feature was led wire to wire by Ollie Harbin who scored his first win of 1998. Second place went to 1996 LLMS champion Von Pope. Von Pope charged from the 12th starting position to edge Bart Weatherford for second at the final turn. Thomas Poff and Jimmy Castleberry rounded out the top five.
Former track champion Richard Elkins continues to pace the point battle by 12 points over veteran Jimmy Castleberry. Pope moves into third place six points behind Castleberry. Richard Scruggs falls to fourth and Thomas Poff maintains fifth in points.
Rookie James Wright III scored his first career Street Stock feature win by pacing Paul Gibbs and Larry Chumney to the finish. Wright started outside the third row and put his Chevy out front early while up to five cars battled for the second spot. Gibbs claimed the runner-up spot leaving Chumney and Robert Hight side by side for the final two circuits. At the line it was Chumney on the inside nosing past Hight for third. Jeff Warren completed the top five finishing order. Chumney continues to lead the points standings over David Roberts and Westley Bass.
Marlon Lynn started fifteenth in the 28 car starting field of Modified Mini Stocks to win the 25 lap feature. Lynn demonstrated the power of his No. 0 during heat race action by taking that win too. Dusty Robinson finished second to Lynn in both heat and feature races and Eugene Davidson was third in the feature. Davidson takes over the point lead, as defending champion and point leader Randy Storer suffered problems with his Mopar, retiring from the event early. Wade Leithead and Bob Storer completed the top five at the finish.
Craig Corbin dominated the V8 Pure Stock feature over Donnie Harp, David Davis, Bob Gorsuch and Willie Lacey. Brian Bowman nipped Chris Kingham to win the 4 Cylinder Pure Stock feature followed by David McCaulley, Doug Bowen and Billie May.
The Kids Club hit the track for their 15 lap feature and Junior division driver Aaron Williamson led the way to the checkers followed by Larry McCormick. McCormick staged a back and forth battle for second with Freddie Lucas with McCormick taking the spot 2 laps from the finish. Brandon Hershey, Richie Acres and Sean Bass in a borrowed car completed the finishing order.
Racing action continues on the quarter mile this coming Saturday night with the Dwarf Cars joining the regular lineup of Late Model Sportsman, Street Stocks, Modified Mini Stocks and Pure Stock divisions. Grandstand gates open at 5 with racing getting under way at 7 PM.
