Intense Racing Action Kicks Off Auburndale Racing Season by Gene Crane Auburndale, FL Kevin Ingram was able to hold a duel between Harold Cannon and Bryan Storer to capture the 25 lap Late Model Sportsman feature Saturday night at Auburndale Speedway. Cannon and Storer ran side by side for several circuits of the quarter mile oval and were never able to mount a successful challenge to Ingram’s wire to wire sprint. Following the top three to the line was another hard fought battle between Ollie Harbin and Howard O’Steen. Micheal King narrowly missed beating out Robert Hight to the line in Street Stock action. Hight held on for the win in a 25 lap event that saw many of the new bumpers put to the test throughout the field. Rounding out the top 5 were Larry Chumney, Scott Yutzy and Mark Bell. Lee Davis picked up the win in Modified Mini Stock action. Davis, who would later see his Late Model mount develop problems early in that feature, was able to cruise to the line with Randy Storer, Tony Davidson, Gary Brown and Keith Roggen in tow. Daniel Clough staged a charge from the back of the pack to run down pole sitter Kim Scheffler-Hays and finally win the V8 Pure Stock feature on the final turn of the race. Scheffler-Hays took off with the lead and Clough made several outside passes to close in just short of the halfway point. The leaders battled for several laps and were beginning to work through slower traffic when caution came out 4 laps from the end. The late race caution cleared the track ahead of the leaders for their sprint to the checkers and on the final lap the Scheffler-Hays machine pushed to the outside exiting turn four and Clough was able to dive to the bottom and pull out the win. Trailing the lead duo to the stripe were Daniel Sasnett, James Wright and Randy King. Teammates Daryl Habbershaw and Chip Burton made it a one two punch in the 4 Cylinder Pure Stock feature. Habbershaw who had the advantage of starting from the pole led wire to wire with Burton on his rear deck lid the entire way. Finishing third through fifth were David McCaulley, Paul Cockrell and Shawn Williams. In the Best Looking Car Contest several of the teams showed off several great looking race cars. In the Late Model Sportsman Division, Ray Cuzzone and his WPCV 97 Country mount shared the honors with Billy Jones and his Towerview Motors WOW-HOLY-COW machine. Modified Mini Stock Division winners were Randy Storer with his Flintstone ride and Pops Weatherford and his new Mustang. Winners in the Street Stock Division were Robert King and Ron Abney. Donnie Harp and his camouflage creation and Kim Scheffler-Hays tied for the honors in V8 Pure Stock and Jan Mason with her Jeff Gordon look alike took the title in 4 Cylinder Pure Stock Division. Racing action continues this Saturday night with all of the regular divisions in action. Joining the lineup will be the Dwarf Cars as they make their first appearance for 1997 at Auburndale Speedway. Special guests at the track this week are scheduled to be TV32’s Haywood Henson and George Crenshaw who will join us to talk about his tumble at Daytona. Racing action gets underway at 7 PM and open practice is Wednesday from 5 until 8. Results of racing action Saturday night March 1, 1997 at Auburndale Speedway
