AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(11-22-97) West Claims Season Finale By Gene Crane Auburndale, FL- Jim West closed out the racing season Saturday night at Auburndale Speedway in winning style. West paced the 30 lap 4 Cylinder Pure Stock enduro just ahead of a fierce five car second place battle which was finally decided in the short sprint from turn four to the start-finish line on the final lap. Shane Bennett, Chris Kingham, Billy Standridge, Hubert Baker and Dusty Robinson all fought for track position behind West and were three wide around the quarter mile on several occasions. Bennett got back to the line to finish second with Kingham settling for third. Standridge and Robinson completed the top five. Daniel Clough held on for the win in the V8 Pure Stock feature over Randy King and James Wright. Bob Gorsuch and Donnie Harp were fourth and fifth. The Modified Mini Stock feature was won by Wade Leithead who ran down the leader Lee Davis to post the victory. Leithead won his heat earlier in the evening and started the 25 lap grind deep in the field. Kevin Boykin jumped into the early lead until his car shut down exiting turn four. Lee Davis made contact with the left rear of Boykin's disabled machine and motored past into the lead. Leithead worked his way to the front and made the pass on Davis with two laps to go. Davis finished second followed by Steve Pelo, Jason Rendell and Bo Davis. Travis Roland won the Street Stock feature leading Jeff Warren and David Williamson all 25 laps to the finish. David Roberts was fourth and Mitch Hawk brought a new car out to round out the top five. The full night of racing also featured the Top Cop Racing Association and Butch Yancy was the winner in the Gold Shield division beating Bob Hart and Jeff Manning to the finish. Steve Wagner outran Rodney Tower and Phil Riles for the win in the Cruiser Class. Bill Burback took the win for the Dwarf Car Racing Association feature with Robbie Smith and Steve Treager giving chase. The top three was an inversion of the top three finish in heat races number two. Heat race winner Dennis Archinal was able post a fourth place finish with long time Florida competitor Milford Cross completing the top five. Gordon Motorsports presented the Baby Grand division in their ¾ scale Winston Cup like racers. Rod Ingram led Willie Ingram and Bobby Cornelius back to the checkers. The 1997 Awards Banquet will complete the racing season and honor the newest division champions. The banquet is December 6th at 7 PM. Tickets are available from the speedway office and must be purchased in advance.
