(9-20-97) Jimmy Castleberry Wins Bud 50 at Auburndale by Gene Crane Auburndale, FL: Veteran driver Jimmy Castleberry scored his second win of the season Saturday night at Auburndale Speedway in the Late Model Sportsman Bud 50. Castleberry took command of the caution plagued event at the halfway point after working his way around early leader Robbie Storer. Jimmy was unchallenged the rest of the way as Thomas Poff ran second nearly a half straight behind the winner. Bryan Storer set fast time and started eighth with the inversion. Bryan was the first car to drop out after moving up into the sixth position. Trailing Castleberry and Poff to the line were Jimmy Ballard, Tony Poff and Ray Cuzzone. Cautions dominated much of the race with two significant crashes bringing the field to a stop under red. The first incident occurred on lap 11 when Ollie Harbin had a problem with his number 65 entering turn one. Billy Jones spun and slid into the outside wall destroying the rear of his number 18. The second crash occurred on lap 28 when the powerplant in Robbie Storer machine exploded entering turn three. Howard O'Steen spun in the debris and Bud Bronson was able to stop his machine without getting into Osteen's car. Steve Alderman could not get his number 2 slowed down in time and bounced up and into the left side window of Bronson's car. Point leader Ray Cuzzone was also involved and returned to the race after a visit to the pits for repairs while remaining in the same lap as the leaders. There were no injuries to any drivers during the event in spite of the scary appearance of the accidents. Ray Cuzzone continues to lead in the season championship battle for the Late Model Sportsman division. Ollie Harbin is second in points followed by rookie Tony Poff. The Street Stock division thrilled the crowd as the top two contenders in the point battle dueled for the lead in the 25 lap feature. Michael King would eventually lead the field to the checkered flag after borrowing the number 69 of Jeff Warren. King's own car developed problems during the heat race and Michael was able to borrow the Warren machine for the feature. It was the second time that the Warren car has played a role in the point battle as three weeks ago Westley Bass borrowed the same car in an effort to keep his points championship hopes alive. Ron Lofquist drove the divisions lone Ford to the runner-up spot and second place pointman Westley Bass ran third. Completing the top five at the finish were Johnny Gable and David Williamson. The Modified Mini Stock 25 lap feature win went to James Wood after he used lap traffic to fend off a last lap challenge from Kevin Boykin. Kenny Uhl was third followed by Jay Kaminski and Eugene Davidson. Donnie Ezell had the "Grocery Getter" Pinto Station Wagon out front during the early laps but exploded the engine in the number 19 while leading. The smoke covered the third and fourth turns obscuring vision for the competitors. The field was able to slow down and weave through the corner without any significant difficulties or mishaps. Rookie Mike Harrison picked up his second win of the season in the 15 lap V8 Pure Stock feature. The hard fought battle behind him saw Daniel Sasnett prevail in the second spot followed by Daniel Clough, Kim Scheffler-Hays and Randy King. Doug Bowen went wire to wire in the 15 lap 4 Cylinder Pure Stock feature. Chris Kingham was able to pull along side on several occasions but was unable to make the outside groove work for him. Kingham settled for second followed by Shane Bennett, Daryl Habbershaw and Joe Thomas. Next Saturday night September 27th all regular divisions will be in action along with the Pro Figure Eight cars and the Super Mini Cup machines. Action on the quarter mile oval will break on October the 4th when the NASCAR Goody's Dash series will be in action at the nearby USA International Speedway. The Discount Auto Parts 150 event will mark the first ever visit to the high banked 1/2 mile oval by a NASCAR touring series. Local drivers and regular competitors on the dash tour, Ed Howell and George Crenshaw will be in action along with Auburndale's Derrick Kelly, the 1996 Rookie of the Year in the Hooters Cup series. Seventeen year old Keith Roggen will also attempt to qualify for the race. Roggen is a former member of the Racing for Kids Club at Auburndale Speedway and was the Rookie of the Year for the Mini Stock division for 1996. Roggen will pilot the car formerly driven by Robert Ham on the series and anticipates a limited schedule for 1998 with a full-time effort in NASCAR's subcompact series in 1999. Crenshaw, Howell, Kelly and Roggen represent the most recent crop of talent to find success in touring series racing after proving themselves and their abilities on Auburndale's quarter mile. They join a honored list of well known competitors which includes brothers John and Joe Nemechek along with Rick Wilson.
