Mark DeWaine Wins Demo Derby

Auburndale, FL- Mark DeWaine was the last man standing in the Annual Demolition Derby and took home the $1000 first prize to Holiday FL. A large crowd was on hand and stayed to the end to see the "intentional" crashing and banging, after the "unintentional" contact during the racing events.

The final night of the season had a little of everything, with Doug Rose taking JET powered laps in his Green Mamba jet dragster, with the traditional fire show and "burner pops" thrown in for effect. Rose then returned to the track after the last race and thrilled the crowd with his rendition of the World's Largest Cutting Torch by chaining a mini van to the Green Mamba and burning it to a crisp in a spectacular fireworks show.

The final event of the night was the Demolition Derby, with DeWaine the winner, as the last car still able to move, having put away Josh Haranda and Dick Denoncovin, who finished second and third respectively. Drivers drew pills for starting positions this night, and Billy Jones drew the lowest number in the Street Stock class, and started on the pole for the 25 lap Feature. Jones took the lead at the green and led all 25 laps for the victory, his second win of the season. Brian Donohue started beside Jones at the start and dogged him the whole race but Jones never made the mistake that Donohue needed to get by, and settled for second at the checker flag. Michael King again used the outside groove to come to third after starting twelfth. Charles Kopach took fourth and Season Points Champion James Wright III took fifth after starting seventeenth.

32 Modified Mini Stocks signed in and drew pills for the nights action. Eugene Davidson drew the third lowest pill, but the pole position car was unable to make the start, putting Davidson on the inside front row position for the start. He led all 25 laps for his fourth win of the season, but was strongly challenged by Jay Kaminski until Kaminski's car suddenly lost power coming off the fourth turn late in the race. Rick Sirmans had worked his way to third by that time, and he took up the chase of Davidson for the win. Davisdon was able to hold off Sirmans, with Tommy Bower, Gary Brown, and David Seeright (in son Michael's racer) finishing third through fifth. 27 V8 Pure Stocks were on hand, and Daniel Clough took his fifth win of the season in the 20 lap feature. Sam Cressman started on the pole and led many laps, but Clough was not to be denied, and drove around him late in the race for the win. Mark Cooper took third after starting eleventh, with Herman Brame fourth after starting twenty-second, and Pete Cracolici fifth. The 4 Cylinder Pure Stocks 15 lap feature was won by Matt Craig. Craig started on the pole after drawing the number 1 pill, and led all the way for his third win of the year.

Randy King and Season Points Champion Chris Narramore took turns challenging Craig for the lead, but Craig crossed the start-finish first. King took second, with Narramore third. Jeff Bews brought his brother's car home fourth and Tim Seeright was fifth.

The Allison Legacy Series returned to Auburndale with a wild 20 lap feature. Dave Malcomson took the win, but several incidents behind him kept the rest of the field in turmoil. It seemed like everyone went to the rear at one time or another, with Doug Benjamin finishing second and Billy Dentmon taking third, after a spin put him a half lap behind the leader. Wayne Tigue Jr. was fourth and Danny Burkhalter rounded out the top five.

Two Powder Puff races were on the schedule, with 11 entries in the V-8 Powder Puff race. Daisy Hall drove to the front to take the win, with Sheila Jones second, Janette Chancey third, Loretta Smith fourth, and Kathy Boyd fifth.

In the 4 Cylinder Powder Puff, Ann King blew away the field, followed to the stripe by Tina Gamble, Jeni Williamson, Kathy Boyd, and Marchell Narramore.

A Memorial was held during intermission for "Wild" Bill Revard, who lost his life at Sunshine Speedway the previous Saturday in a freak racing accident. Drivers made parade laps around the Auburndale Figure 8 layout with Kim Scheffler-Hays leading the field and carrying a checkered flag. The drivers then parked their racecars in the infield and came into the stands with their helmets to collect donations for Bill Revard's young son. The generous racing family on hand this night contributed over $1000 to the trust fund established for the young man's future education.

Racing returns for Auburndale's 2000 season on March 4. Tickets for the Dec. 12 Banquet are available until Dec 7th at the Speedway office. See you at USA International Speedway Nov 27th for the USAR Hooters ProCup Series, Alan Kulwicki Memorial, Hooters 300 and SARA Late Model Sportsman!
