AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

8-1-98 Cuzzone Hangs on for Auburndale Late Model Win Auburndale, FL— Defending Late Model Champion Ray Cuzzone held off challenges from Jimmy Castleberry to win the Late Model Sportsman 25 lap feature Saturday night at Auburndale Speedway. Cuzzone started outside of the first row and worked by polesitter Don Carroll to take the early lead. Carroll's car developed handling problems and retired after 10 laps while Castleberry rocketed into second after starting eighth on the grid. Castleberry challenged on several occasions by swinging to the outside groove but could not get the traction to pull along side Cuzzone's Pontiac. The front two broke away from the field leaving Ollie Harbin, Billy Jones and point leader Richard Elkins to settle their battle for the third spot. Elkins' motor exploded bringing the caution out on lap 20. On the restart Cuzzone and Castleberry separated themselves form the field by 10 car lengths and left Ollie Harbin to battle with Robbie Storer and Billy Jones again for third. Harbin held on over last week's winner Storer for third, Storer was fourth and Jones completed the top five. Jesse Hall led 27 cars to the green in the 25 lap Street Stock feature. Hall jumped out front from his pole position and was never challenged as heavy traffic and intense competition kept many favorites busy. Robert Hight who started 18th used the outside groove, cautions and traffic to work his way into second at the finish. Michael King started 26 and managed to follow Hight through the traffic to claim third at the checkers. Richard Hight and Paul Gibbs rounded out the top five. The night's action proved costly to all in the top five in the point standings with the exception of Hight. Robert Hight takes control of the points lead as a broken fuel pump with 2 laps remaining dropped then point leader Westley Bass down to ninth at the finish. Bass saw his four-point advantage transform into a ten-point deficit. Third in points, Travis Roland was involved in a crash with fifth place pointman Larry Chumney. Roland's car was eliminated from competition with a burst radiator but Chumney was able to continue finishing tenth. Ron Lofquist's "Lonely Ford" was also collected in the accident but suffered only minimal damage. The 25 lap Modified Mini Stock feature saw Dusty Robinson go wire to wire for the win. Defending Mini Stock Champion and current point leader Randy Storer maneuvered his Dodge to second at the finish after starting 18th on the grid. Lee Davis who also started deep in the field worked his way up to third. Travis Roland was able to fend off a challenge from James Wood to claim fourth with Wood settling for fifth. Shawn Williams was shaken up in a crash, which began when Williams' teammate Jay Kaminski blew an engine exiting turn two. Williams spun in the fluid deposited by Kaminski's motor and slid to the infield. Daryl Habbershaw also got into the slick stuff in turn two and spun into the infield striking the Williams car. Williams climbed from his car under his own power and was check by safety crews. Randy Storer continues to dominate the points but the second place battle tightened up considerably with Travis Roland closing slightly on Bob Storer who is third. Both Roland and Storer closed the gap on second place Eugene Davidson. The 15 lap V8 Pure Stock feature saw Bob Gorsuch finally put his number 69 out front in the closing laps to take the win. Donnie Harp worked through the pack to finish second followed by pole sitter Brian Donahue. David Davis and Jason Todd completed the top five. Jim West who took the win after starting from the pole controlled 4 Cylinder Pure Stock action. Michael Seeright also started on the front row and grabbed second at the start to never relinquish the spot. The remainder of the finish order was Matthew Craig, Billy Standridge and Mark Soule. Racing action takes a night off next Saturday August the 8th as the Florida Pro Series and SARA Sportsman cars are in action at nearby USA International Speedway. Racing action picks back up on Saturday August 15th with all regular divisions in action and joining the program will be the Dwarf Car Racing Association.
