RACING FIREWORKS AT AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAYS JULY 4th SPECIAL
AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY, Auburndale, FL (6-27-98) There were fireworks both off and on the race track tonight. Track operator Bill Martino brought in a huge fireworks display to entertain race fans at intermission time, and things were just as explosive on the track. Winners included John Moore in Street Stock, Lee Davis in Modified Mini Stock, Tony Elrod Jr. (twice) in Pure Stock 4 Cylinder, and brothers Greg and Rick Bacon in Pure Stock V-8.
The Street Stock Feature saw John Moore start on the pole and he managed to hold off several challengers to take the win. Moore fought off the late race challenge of Dave Roberts to win by a car length at the checkers, in a one-two Chevy finish. Shawn Harper drove his Chevy to third, edging out the fourth place Chevy of Mitch Hawk Jr. at the finish line stripe. Ron Lofquist took fifth in his Gator Construction Ford. Heat race wins in Street Stock went to Shawn Harper and Steve Ware.
Modified Mini Stock action saw some spectacular driving by Lee Davis as he charged from the middle of the twenty five car starting field to win the Feature. It was no easy task for Davis as his Ford had to make up a lot of ground to catch Kenny Uhl's Dodge which had started on the pole. At one point Uhl had built up nearly a half a lap lead over second place, Davis never gave up though and got the job done. Following Uhl's second place Dodge over the finish line was the Dodge of Kevin Boykin. James Wood's Car Doctor Dodge was fourth, and the Ford of Wes Pyburn came home fifth. Wes Pyburn and Travis Roland won Modified Mini Stock heat races.
Double Features ran tonight in both Pure Stock 4 Cylinder and Pure Stock V-8. In Pure Stock 4 Cylinder Tony Elrod Jr. used some determined driving to win both Feature events. In the first Feature Elrod Jr. led a Dodge parade to the checkers as he nosed out Chris Kingham at the finish. Kingham had Randy King right on his rear bumper in third. Jeremy Hodnett broke up the Dodge parade by taking fourth with his Ford, while Wayne Weaver's Dodge finished fifth. The second Pure Stock 4 Cylinder Feature of the evening saw Elrod Jr. use a daring last lap pass to edge Wayne Weaver at the finish. It was another Dodge parade as Chris Kingham took third, Randy King was fourth, and Billie May finished fifth. Heat race winners were Jeremy Hodnett and Wayne Weaver.
It was a family affair in Pure Stock V-8 as the Bacon brothers fried the competition, taking both Feature race wins. Greg Bacon took the first Feature win in his Chevy, over James Atkins second place Chevy, the Olds of Willie Lacey was third. Rick Bacon drove his Chevy to fourth in the first Feature, and the Olds of Bob Gorsuch crossed the finish line in fifth. The second Feature of the evening had a great battle at the front of the field, with Rick Bacon's Chevy going to victory lane. Carl Thompson took second in his Chevy by about one foot at the finish, edging Willie Lacey's third place Olds. Bob Gorsuch had his Olds right on Lacey's rear bumper for fourth, and the Chevy of Donnie Harp took fifth. Heat race wins went to Greg Bacon and Willie Lacey.
Super Mini Cup racers were also on hand tonight to entertain the fans. Terry Tillis won the Feature, Doug Capps was second, and Mike Harrison took third. Fourth place went to Chris Fountain, and Steve Smith rounded out the top five.
Powder Puff racers closed out the evenings racing action on the quarter mile oval. Tammy Wood won the special ladies only race, Brandi Landes was second, and Sandra Jones finished third. Yvonne Turner took fourth place, and Alisha Storer was fifth.
Auburndale Speedway will be closed the Fourth of July for the Pepsi 400 at Daytona. Racing action returns the following Saturday night July 11 with the Mid-Season Championships for Late Models, Street Stock, Modified Mini Stocks, Pure Stock 4 Cylinders, and Pure Stock V-8's.
