POFF SCORES LATE MODEL WIN AT AUBURNDALE
Auburndale, FL - Thomas Poff of Haines City, Florida won the Late Model division tonight at Auburndale Speedway. Other winners included Johnny Gamble Jr. (Street Stock), Randy Storer (Modified Mini Stock), Mark Soule (4 Cylinder Pure Stock), and Ted Anderson (V-8 Pure Stock).
The Late Model Feature saw Thomas Poff charge from his inside row two starting spot into the lead early in the 25 lap event. Poff then kept his Hungry Howie's Pizza/Carl's U-Pull-It Camaro out front for the victory.
Robbie Storer drove his Autoland Chevrolet to second place, holding off third place Richard Elkins Jr.. Ricky Scruggs was fourth in the Blair Homes Chevrolet, while Ollie Harbin took fifth in the Pro Auto Machine Lumina. Late Model heat race wins went to Ray Cuzzone's WPCV 97 Country Pontiac and Von Pope's Seacoast/Tyler Homes Pontiac.
Johnny Gamble won his Street Stock heat race and started from the pole in the feature. Gamble managed to win the 25 lap battle by half a car length at the checkers, just ahead of hard charging Michael King who had started eighth. Third went to David Williamson, with Paul Gibbs fourth, and Jeff Warren rounding out the top five. Robert Gullet Sr. also won a Street Stock heat race.
In what had to the wildest Feature of the night, twenty four Modified Mini Stockers took the green flag. At the end of the 25 lap war Randy Storer took a crowd pleasing win with his Dodge. Storer started on the outside of row six and passed other drivers on the high side, the low side, and once even used the infield grass when forced off the track by a fellow competitor! Pole sitter Don Crumley led much of the race, finally finishing second in his battered Ford. James Wood was third in his Car Doctor Dodge, with the Judah Automotive Ford of Bobby Judah fourth, and Jason Rendell in fifth. Judah and Chris Spring won the Modified Mini Stock heat races.
Mark Soule drove his Dodge to the 4 Cylinder Pure Stock victory, after starting sixth. Once out front Soule pulled out to a comfortable lead in the 15 lap feature. The battle for second thrilled the fans, as Gary Green and Billy Standridge raced side by side around the quarter mile Auburndale Speedway for most of the last eight laps. Green nosed his Ford ahead for second at the checkers, with the Dodge of Standridge right alongside in third. Tony Elrod Jr. was fourth in a Dodge, with Hugh Williams' Dodge right on his bumper in fifth. Green and Scott Taylor won the 4 Cylinder Pure Stock heat races.
V-8 Pure Stock action was dominated by the daring driving of Ted Anderson. Anderson charged to victory in his heat race with his Monte Carlo, and started seventh in the Feature event. The hard charging Anderson wasted little time getting to the front, using a wild three wide pass entering turn three to take the lead on the second lap of the 15 lap Feature. Bob Gorsuch was second behind Anderson's Chevrolet, with Donnie Harp finishing third. Willie Lacey and Rick Bacon took fourth and fifth respectively. David Davis also won a V-8 Pure Stock heat race.
Next week at Auburndale Speedway the Southern Pro Trucks race in a 50 lap Feature, along with the regular program including Late Models, Street Stocks, Modified Mini Stocks, 4 Cylinder Pure Stock, and V-8 Pure Stockers.
