Kim Scheffler-Hays returns to home track and wins Action American Race Trucks Feature

By Larry Vergon

Auburndale, FL: Kim Scheffler-Hays lists Auburndale as her home, and raced regularly at Auburndale Speedway, before taking to the road as a touring racer. She returned to Auburndale with the Action American Race Truck Series on Saturday night. Combining a good race truck with the knowledge she had from racing here in the past, and what she has learned on the traveling circuits, she took a popular win with the partisan crowd in the 30 lap feature event. Scheffler-Hays started the event inside the second row and took the lead early. The Thunder and Lightening Motorsports Chevy was hooked up and ran strong the whole race. Tovia Grynewicz started one of the Century Plumbing Chevys on the outside of the second row and chased Scheffler-Hays the rest of the way, after the two got past the front row starters, but was unable to close up the gap and challenge for the win. Charlie Worth was third in his Loxahatchee based Chevy, followed by Gus Coursen in the JDI Farms Chevy (up from 11th at the green) and Paul Grynewicz in another Century Plumbing Chevy. Heat race wins went to Doug Miller in the Chastain Miller Farms Ford and Worth. In the 25 lap Modified Mini Stock feature, 18 year old Michael Seeright, who also started on the inside of the second row, won his first feature of the season in the No. 18 Toyota Corolla. Eugene Davidson and Seeright were side by side for the last two laps, but Seeright was able to hold him off for the victory. Davidson had started the race in 13th in his No. 5 Charger, and had to work his way around several good cars before challenging for the win. Don Ezell seemed to come from nowhere late in the race, and brought the No. 25 Mustang home third, after starting 14th. James Wood was a strong contender in the No. 69 Omni all race long, but the car faded at the end with what appeared to be overheating brakes, and was fourth at the checkered flag. Randy Storer rounded out the top five with in his No. 90 Charger, after taking the green in 12th. Tony Davidson, in the No. 53, and Mike Rudder, in the No. 0, won their heats. The Street Stock 25 lap feature was won by Ron Lofquist in the No. 49 Thunderbird, for his second win in a row. Lofquist started the 'Lonely Ford' on the outside of the seventh row and had moved to third behind Richard Hight in the No. 23 Monte Carlo and Michael King in the No. 96 Monte Carlo. King had used the outside groove from his 12th starting position to catch Hight, who took the early lead from his outside front row starting position. Hight and King were battling side by side when contact was made on lap 16 in the first turn, with both cars spinning, bringing out the caution. Hight suffered minor damage to the right side sheet metal and was able to continue, while King was out for the night with front end damage. Hight restarted in the lead, with Lofquist in hot pursuit. Lofquist was able to make the inside pass a few laps later and led to the end. Hight, unable to get back to the inside, gave up three more positions, and finished in fifth. Travis Roland was second in the No. 07 Monte Carlo, after starting 10th, and Jason Bennet brought the No. 5 Grand Prix home third, after starting ninth. James Wright III was fourth in the No. 56 Monte Carlo for a second top five finish in the last two events. Heats were won by Roland and Hight. The V8 Pure Stock 15 lap feature was a Brian Donahue benefit, as the young driver, in only his second year of competition, drove around and through the field for his fourth feature win of the season. Donahue started the No. 3 in 16th and used every racing groove on the track to get to the front. Dan Rising started on the outside of the front row and led most of the race, but could not stop the run to the front of Donahue. Rising was second in the No. 61 and Vic Percifield came home third in the Rugrats No. 37, after starting 14th. 'Slick' Willie Lacy started in 9th and finished fourth in the No. 15, while Dustin Breeden was fifth in the No. 80. Heat winners were Donahue and Breeden. In 4 Cylinder Pure Stock, Tim McKenzie got the win that eluded him last time, when he was involved with a lapped car while leading the feature, and suffered damage that sidelined him for the night. McKenzie took the green from the inside of the second row in his No. 53, quickly took the lead, and never looked back, for his first feature win of the season. Randy King started 11th in his No. 75, and drove the high groove to second at the finish. Mark Soule was third in the No. 76, after starting 9th, Chris Narramore came back from a spin to finish 4th in his No. 16, and Joe Tomas was fifth in the No. 25, after starting 7th. Heat wins went to King and Narramore. The Super Mini Cup cars returned to Auburndale, with Terry Tullis taking the win in both the feature and his heat for a clean sweep in the No. 31. William Capps was second in the No. 63, Chris Fontaine third in the No. 47, Bruce Smith fourth in the No. 35, and Doug Smith rounded out the top five in the No. 17. Next Saturday, April 24th, Auburndale racing action will include Limited Late Models, Modified Mini Stocks, Street Stocks, Four Cylinder Pure Stocks, Pure Stock V-8's; and the return of the Dwarf Cars.
