***PRESS RELEASE*** ***FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE***

6-14-1997 Lofquist, Bass Split Twin Features at Auburndale Speedway by Gene Crane Auburndale, FL Ron Lofquist and Westley Bass split the Fathers Day Twin 25’s for the Street Stock division Saturday night at Auburndale Speedway. Lofquist posted the fastest time in qualifying with his lone Ford nameplate. Only two other drivers reached down into the 15 second bracket in qualifying, Bass and Kids Club graduate and Street Stock rookie Travis Roland. Lofquist and Bass started from the front row in the first 25 lap event and ran nose to tail much of the way as they wove their way through the 28 car starting field. Point leader Bass made several attempts to move to the outside groove, which has worked well for the Lake Wales driver in weeks past, but the heavy traffic did not permit a successful challenge. Third fastest qualifier Travis Roland trailed the pair by five car lengths much of the event and finished third. Johnny Gamble and David Williamson rounded out the top five but perhaps the best battle on the track in this first event was for sixth. Keith Schoonover eventually prevailed over Robert Hight, Jeff Warren, Scott Yutzy and Steve Ware for the sixth position in the five car war which spanned the entire 25 laps. Bass and Lofquist started deep in the field for the second 25 lap feature for the Street Stock division but the night ended early for lonely Ford of Lofquist as he slowed early and parked the number 49. Mitch Hawk led the early laps until Larry Chumney took over and appeared to have a good chance at picking up the win. Chumney and Robert Hight collided racing for the lead out of turn two with three laps to go eliminating both cars. Bass had used the outside groove to worked his way up to third during the closing laps and was closing on the leaders just prior to the crash. Bass took over the lead for the restart and went on to win with David Williamson in second, Mitch Hawk posting a third place run and Keith Schoonover and Scott Yutzy completing the top five. Late Model point leader Howard O’Steen scored his third win in a row in the 25 lap feature. Front row starters, Billy Jones and Ollie Harbin broke away from the field and battled for the lead in the early going. O’Steen started inside the fourth row and was part of a spirited four car battle for third with Late Model rookie Tony Poff, Harold Cannon, Ray Cuzzone and Billy Jones. The third place quartet ran two abreast for a half dozen laps before Poff, in third, spun entering turn three bringing out the first caution of the event. O’Steen resatarted from third with Cannon on his rear deck lid. Harbin’s night was shorted lived when the powerplant exploded in his number 65 to bring out the second caution. O’Steen and Cannon shuffled Jones back to third and went on to run one-two at the finish. Jones was third followed by Cuzzone and Richard Todd. 1996 Mini Stock Rookie of the Year Keith Roggen put his Pinto in Victory Lane in the 25 lap feature. Chris Spring held off Kevin Boykin for second and Donnie Lockard, who ran third much of the night had to settle for fourth ahead of current point leader Randy Storer. Pure Stock action saw Kim Scheffler-Hays win the 15 lap V8 Pure Stock feature and Chris Kingham picked up the winners check in the 15 lap 4 Cylinder Pure Stock feature. Big Jim Bargo continued to dominate the Spectator drags with his Mustang although the final pairing saw a bumping and rubbing run to line with the Pinto of John Davis. There was plenty of good news in the grandstand during the night. Mini Stock driver Pops Weatherford could not stay away from the track after his triple bypass last week stopped for a brief visit. Later in the evening race fan Corky Burk had the tables turned on him as his girlfriend Melanie, who had previously sidestepped his marriage proposals, sneaked to the announcer booth and asked Corky to marry her. The answer from turn four was an unmistakable yes. Plenty of exciting racing action is on tap at the Auburndale Speedway to finish out the month of June. Next week, June 21st, the Legend Cars of Florida along with the Outlaw Modifieds and TQ Midgets join the five regular divisions for a packed night on the banked quarter mile. A Fireworks show highlights the intermission on June 28th followed by the regular divisions, Pro Figure 8’s, a Powder Puff race and the Kids Club .
