1998 Season Finale at Auburndale Speedway
Auburndale, FL— The 1998 racing season came to an exciting close Saturday night at Auburndale Speedway with feature racing, motorcycle stunts and a slam bang demolition derby. Chris Fountaine, Michael Holland, Michael King, Robbie Storer, Sandy Treager, and Scott Taylor all went to Victory Lane in their respective features. Sky Lungston thrilled the crowd with his motorcycle stunts and completed two jumps across 9 race cars. One lucky lady in the grandstands was the winner of a 2-CT diamond tennis bracelet courtesy of Midas Jewelers, sponsor of 1998 Limited Late Model Champion Richard Elkins Jr. The night was capped off with a giant demolition derby won by Ken Fenske.
Reggie Ware took the early lead in the Jarrett-Bodiford Ford 4 Cylinder Road Course event only to have the motor go away after leading the first 9 laps. Scott Taylor took over command and held off challenges from Tony Elrod Jr. and Matthew Craig to claim the win. Elrod and Craig finished second and third. Hugh Williams and Michael Seeright rounded out the top five.
Ken Fenske of Winter Haven in an Oldsmobile won the Demolition Derby. Bob Storer with his Station Wagon was second with Ed Horanda of Davenport third.
Chris Fountaine led the Super Mini Cup cars to the checkered flag in their 25 lap feature. Doug Smith, who destroyed his previous Mini Cup car during an event Halloween night at the speedway, drove his new car to a second place finish. Terry Tullis, Lynn Wyles and Tony Farish completed the remainder of the top five finishers.
Michael Holland took over the lead just past the halfway point in the Dwarf Car 30 lap feature to claim the win. Allen Davis led from the drop of the green and tangled with Tim McDaniel while battling for the lead. Holland took over the top spot and led the remaining distance for the win. Bob Quick charged his way to second and was closing on Holland at the finish. Bill Burback and Rick Lundee battled for third with Burback claiming the third spot. Dan Berry completed the top five.
Robbie Storer took the family Modified Mini Stock to the 25 lap feature win followed by Jay Kaminski and 1998 Modified Mini Stock division champion Randy Storer. Tommy Merrell Jr., making his first start at Auburndale Speedway, was fourth followed by Wade Leithead.
Ron Lofquist in his "Only Lonely" Ford chased Michael King to the Street Stock checkers only to finish second. Rookie James Wright III was third followed by Mitch Hawk Jr. and David Roberts.
The Auburndale Speedway wishes to thank all who have supported racing action during this 1998 season. The 1998 Awards Banquet will be held December 6th beginning at 5 PM. Advance tickets are required and may be purchased at the speedway office.
