Cedar Rapids, IA.(September 09, 2002)-- 1st Mechanical failure of year end any hope of continuing streak of top 10 finishes.
After putting the #04 ASILIMITED Monte Carlo 2nd to the pole on Saturday, the team was excited at the chances on Sunday. On lap 12, these thoughts were quickly ended. "I think we have a serious problem" Butch radioed over the headset"I think the engine is failing" These are not good words to hear after Butch had just driven the #04 ASILIMITED Monte Carlo hard into the lead passing pole sitter #83 Joey Clanton in the 1st lap.
Due to yellows that began the race, Butch was able to maintain the lead through lap 31 and then began to fall back. At lap 77, which was within our"fuel window" the"Silver Bullet" was brought in to review the engine. After a quick review and a right side tire change Butch was sent back on the track in 25th position. "We pitted early to try to find something, unfortunately we did not and we were forced to run a wounded car the rest of the afternoon" said a dejected crew leader Deon Denneau.
During the middle of the race, due to our early pit stop, the team was rewarded with the"Halfway Leader award at lap 150 and (4) B F Goodrich tires. "I was so frustrated driving a car I knew had no chance of winning" said Butch Miller"I just wish we could have done something tofix the car so we could have been competitive.
"Adversity is what makes teams strong" says an upbeat team owner Ken Smith"I know this will challenge all of us and we will go to Illiana stronger and better than ever."
Butch Miller and the #04 ASILIMITED Monte Carlo has moved into 15th position and within 53 points of 14th position in the Owner Standings in just 10 starts out of the 17 races fielded by ASA. Current statistics for 10 races this year are 4 poles, 3 wins, 3 top 5s and 3 top 10's.
The 2002 ASA Racing Series heads to Illiana Motor Speedway in Schereville, IN. and the
CITGO/MDA 300 on Sunday, September 21st. The race will take the green flag just after
