Blue Grass, IA (April 22, 2001) - Jeff Mallonee of Davenport, IA, held off a late race charge by Robbie Ray, also of Davenport, IA, to win his first race at Hawkeye Raceway since a crash that destroyed his car there last October. Ironically, the same man that fields the defending champion's car, also was the engine builder that supplied the horsepower that muscled Mallonee to the win.
Mark Ray, the owner of MLR Competition Engines, and father and team owner the series defending championship team, following the race was pleased with the one - two finish, "It's always great to see engines you've built run up front" proclaimed Ray, "but to see them finish first and second is very rewarding."
The heat races went to Bart Andrews, who was sporting a new blue and silver number nine paint job for 2001, and Ray, also sporting a new number one after winning the championship in 2000.
Andrews took off from his outside row two starting position to lead every lap and win the first heat. Mallonee followed in second position after battling with Shawn Scripter early in the race.
Ray took the second heat race winning from his outside pole starting position. Coming in second was Kip Anderson, who was subbing for Mike Raymond in the number four Kehoe entry.
The feature event of the night was a hard fought battle between Mallonee and Andrews before Andrews stopped on the track with three laps to go bringing out the first and only caution of the race. On the restart Mallonee got the jump on Ray and took a two car length lead. Mallonee was able to hold on and take the win.
