Roger Rager picked up his second consecutive Wissota Sprint car feature on Tuesday night at the Grove Creek Speedway in Grove City, MN. The Pequot Lakes, MN driver started Butch Donahue's sprinter on the front row and led all 25 laps to record his second victory in three days. Rager also won with the Wissota Sprints on Sunday night at the Buffalo River Speedway in Glyndon, MN.
Rager and fellow front row starter Kurt Kurtzweg, who was making his first appearance of the season in a sprint car, brought the field down to the green flag, and Rager immediately jumped out front. Chuck Swenson also made some dicey moves to move into the second spot before Jimmy Kouba flipped his #2K in turn 2 on the second lap. On the restart, Kurtzweg had mechanical failure and stalled his sprinter on the backstretch to bring out another yellow flag. Rager again paced the field, but Swenson was reeling in the leader as they made their way through lapped traffic. However, the fight would end as Swenson's rear-end broke in turn 1 causing him to stop and bring out a yellow. This would put Ehren Layton up to the 2nd position with Tony Donahue, who was in a team car to Rager's, Sye Anderson, and Gary Walton rounding out the top five with 10 to go.
Layton would challenge Rager briefly before the veteran racer stretched out a sizable lead to take his 6th Wissota victory of the season. Layton held on for second for the second consecutive race to match his career best Wissota finish. Rookie Sye Anderson made a strong charge to take third over the last few laps and Donahue and Walton rounded out the top five. The heats for the 16 Wissota sprints were won by Norem, Kurt Kurtzweg, and Ehren Layton. The Donahue Harley Davidson Sports Center Dash for Cash was won by Chuck Swenson, who then drew a 6 invert for the feature to put Rager on the pole. There was a lengthy delay following a pair of incidents in the dash. As the white flag flew, Layton and Butch Kozoil made contact in turn 2 and Kozoil flipped over the bank in turn 2. Meanwhile, the steering gear broke as Tony Norem drove Mike Botzek's #B1st car into the third turn. Norem made heavy contact with the concrete wall and ripped down a large section of the catch fence. Both drivers were uninjured but finished for the evening.
Sye Anderson had his name drawn for a trip for two to the Bahamas as part of a special promotion for the August Heat Speedweek Series. The next Wissota Sprint race will be held at the Dakota State Fair Speedway on Saturday night, September 1st. Grove Creek has canceled their scheduled NOSA 410 show on Saturday, September 8th due to the damage that was done to the catch fence, but hopes to reschedule for next year when a more sturdy fence can be installed.
