Brent Kaeding - Spin And Win !
American Brent Kaeding showed why he is the King of Californian Sprintcar racing during the running of Round 6 of the Kratzmann Caravans Sprintcar Series at Brisbane International Speedway on December 29 by winning the Feature event in emphatic style, a style that included an uncharacteristic spin on lap 12 while comfortably leading the race! Kaeding, after losing only a handful of positions, quickly recovered and took back the lead from Ricky Mitchell following a lap 15 restart for the spun racer of Kathy Kelly, who ironically also spun on the slick surface while in the race lead. Unfortunately for Kelly, she was sent to the rear and spun again on lap 20 ending her night's racing. Mitchell, having his first run at BIS for the season, impressed with his speed throughout the night and was rewarded for his efforts with second place behind the big Californian at the end of the 25 lap journey.
Fellow Californian Ryan Flynn, a stand on the gas racer who enjoys running the high line, capped his first night of racing on Australian soil with a third place finish after fighting his way through the pack from his fifth row starting position. Rob Kyle enjoyed his best finish for some time in fourth, just ahead of 18 year old American Destiney Hays, also making her racing debut in Australia. For Destiney, it was a much better finish to the night than the start, having gently rolled the #20 Maxim in her first heat race after brushing the wall in turn two.
Ater having won four Feature events in a row, Tony Bridge's great start to the season came to a crashing halt during Heat 2 when he slammed the wall entering turn 3, damaging the front of the Avenger chassis. His night would eventually end on lap 11 of the Feature race when the temporary repair to the chassis failed, allowing the front axle to move sideways in the car and forcing him infield.
Heat race wins went to Brent Kratzmann, Ricky Mitchell, Kathy Kelly and Rob Kyle, with Kratzmann also outpacing Kaeding for the win in the six lap Trophy Dash. Alan Woods narrowly won the OzSprintcar final from Darren Vine.
