Hodges' Triumphant Return To BIS
Reigning Qld Sprintcar Summer ShootOut Champion Darrell Hodges returned to Brisbane International Speedway and the winner's circle on March 9 with an all the way win in the night's 20 lap A-Main event. It was a welcome win for the Hodges Motorsport team after a season of indifferent results and a confidence boosting victory is just what the team were looking for ahead of the Energy Release Sprintcar Stampede and Qld Title events in the upcoming weeks.
Hodges (Valvoline Maxim), from position four on the grid, set up the win with an inside pass on this season's form driver in Qld and pole-sitter Tony Bridge on the opening lap, a pass that saw Bridge loop the AB Bridge Removalists Avenger in turn three and bring half the field to a stop on the racetrack. Among those involved in the crash and eliminated from the event were top runners Stephen Bell and Peter Thorley, Bell with header damage and Thorley's Qld Diesel Spares Maxim suffering extensive damage to the front of the chassis after contact with the wall.
With Bridge sent to the rear for causing the incident, Hodges moved to the front row for the restart and soon opened up a comfortable lead over last start winner Ricky Mitchell who had worked his way into second position ahead of Brock Dean, Kathy Kelly and OzSprintcar driver Jason Macdonald. Macdonald's performance particularly impressive, having started the Jaxview Interstate Trucking J&J from position thirteen after winning the 10 lap OzSprintcar Final for the second time in as many starts. These positions would remain unchanged unti Dean (AVWG Tognotti) spun the #99 racer in turn three on lap ten and from the ensuing restart, Hodges was untroubled over the remaining laps to take the win from Mitchell, Kelly, Bridge and Adam Tulloch after the race was declared on lap 18 for an incident involving Macdonald, Phil Foster and Doug Cavill in turn three.
