RAHMER WINS 22ND ANNUAL SPRING CLASSIC AT WILLIAMS GROVE
Mechanicsburg, PA 4/29/05 - It all came down to brakes. Including the other kind of breaks.
Salfordville's Fred Rahmer lost his brakes on the 10th lap while holding a considerable lead. Then he watched his lead evaporate to a hard-charging Todd Shaffer in heavy lapped traffic. But then the defending track champion got the other kind of break - a caution with two laps to go.
That cleared the way for Rahmer to forget about his missing brakes and race away to his second win of the year at Williams Grove Speedway Friday night in the 22nd Annual Spring Classic for the 410 sprints.
"I lost the brakes about the 10th lap...I have no brakes," said Rahmer in victory lane. "When we came to them lapped cars I had to slow way down...it was pretty hairy."
Polesitter Niki Young grabbed the lead at the drop of the green to the 30-lap event with Alan Cole and Brian Leppo in tow.
Meanwhile Rahmer, who started seventh, was charging through the field and passed Todd Shaffer in the first and second turns and then Brian Leppo in the third and fourth turns of the fifth lap to move into second place. Rahmer quickly closed on Young and pulled a perfect slider in the third and fourth turns to take the lead.
Following a red flag for a flipping Keith Kauffman and a spinning Brian Leppo on the seventh lap, Rahmer pulled away while sixth-starting Shaffer moved around Young into second.
All Appeared well for Rahmer as he pulled away to a commanding 2.40-second lead over Shaffer before heading into lapped traffic on the 14th lap.
That was when the loss of his brakes on the 10th lap began to show as Shaffer slowly began closing on the defending five-time Grove track champ. With five laps to go Shaffer was within striking distance of Rahmer and was on his bumper with two-laps to go when the caution waved for a spinning Rich Eichelberger in the first and second turns.
"I got to lapping some of them guys and then they moved up in front of me." said Rahmer. "When I had to get out of the gas to run that speed without brakes, I couldn't do it...so I knew he (Shaffer) would be coming."
That caution cleared the way for Rahmer to run without brakes, but the caution waved again, this time with one lap to go when second-running Shaffer slowed to a stop with a flat right-rear tire.
Rahmer then cruised to a 3.31-second win over Niki Young for his first career win in the Annual Spring Classic. Rahmer became the first repeat winner in the 410 sprint ranks at the historic Mechanicsburg half-mile in 2005. He also took home a cool $6,000 for his efforts, and raised his all-time win mark to 63 at the Grove.
Todd Hestor finished third, Mark Smith fourth and Greg Hodnett fifth. Completing the top-10 were Lucas Wolfe, Rick Lafferty, Alan Cole, Lance Dewease and Doug Esh.
Heats for "410" sprinters were won by Jason Johnson, Mike Erdley and Fred Rahmer, with Todd Hestor winning the B-Main.
Fast time in time trials for the 31-sprinters on hand was set by Keith Kauffman with a one-lap time of 16.645-seconds (108.142 MPH).
Carlisle's Jason Shultz picked up his first career Williams Grove 358 Sprint win in the 20-lap finale. Shultz passed race-long leader Dale Hammaker in the third and fourth turns of the 11th lap and raced away to a .91-second win over Hammaker.
Mount Wolf's Adrian Shaffer finished third, Felton's Chad Trout fourth and Jake Raudabaugh fifth. Completing the top-10 were Frankie Herr, Pat Cannon, Cory Haas, Alan Krimes and Brad McClelland.
Heats for the 43 "358" sprinters on hand were won by Dale Hammaker, Mike Lehman, Chad Layton and Jake Raudabaugh. Twin consolations were won by Tim Higgins and Danny Massey.
