MECHANICSBURG, PA., 6/9/00 - The race for the all time win mark at Williams Grove continued Friday night as Sinking Spring's Donnie Kreitz Jr. finished the job he fell short of last week by picking up his 43rd career win at Williams Grove Speedway. Kreitz, who started 10th, shot to the front quickly and passed East Berlin's Jeff Rohrbaugh for the lead on the seventh lap and then held off defending Williams Grove champion Fred Rahmer over the second half of the race to pick up the win and join Keith Kauffman atop the all-time win list at the historic Mechanicsburg half-mile. "It's one week late, but we still got there," said a happy Kreitz in victory lane. "This track all year has seen the one that gets to the front first usually wins and we got lucky enough, got a good start, and Davey (Brown) did a really good job with the chassis and had the car working good." Polesitter Troy Whitesel grabbed the lead at the drop of the green with Rohrbaugh, who started third, close behind. But on the third lap Whitesel suddenly slowed on the backstretch, allowing Rohrbaugh to take the lead. Meanwhile Kreitz had already worked his way in behind Rohrbaugh and made his winning pass in the third and fourth turns on a seventh lap caution restart. But the race was far from over as 11th-starting Rahmer quickly moved into second and tried to run down Kreitz as he too looking to join the fray at the top of the all time win list with his 43rd career Grove win. But Kreitz moved to the top of the track to take away Rahmer's passing lane and held the three-time track champion at bay the rest of the way to take the checkered 1.35 seconds ahead for his second win of the season at the Grove. "I really didn't like going up there to the top (of the track) but I knew I struggled to get by Rohrbaugh," Kreitz added. "I didn't think no body was going to be good enough on the bottom to pass me so I main went up to the top to block and take there line away." "I got a little worried there when Fred (Rahmer) got into second because I just don't run the top that much and he's a lot better than me up there but we were lucky enough to be in the right lane to hold him off." The win, worth $3,000 to Kreitz, was also his third overall win of the year. Rahmer settled for second, followed by Todd Shaffer. Curt Michael drove the Dyer No.461 to an impressive fourth place finish after slamming the guardrail exiting the second early in the race. Mike Wagner finished fifth. Completing the top-10 was Steve Siegel, Johnny Mackison Jr., Mike Erdley, Shawn Keen, and Brook Weibley. Heats for the 25 super sprinters on hand were won by Kreitz, Rahmer, and Curt Michael, with Cliff Brian winning the consolation.
