Montgomery Mops up in O'Reilly ASCS West Plains
WEST PLAINS, Mo. (September 18, 2004) - Tim Montgomery notched his second O'Reilly American Sprint Car Series National Tour presented by Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores and Classic Trailers feature triumph of the season by acing Saturday night's non-stop 25-lap main event at West Plains Motor Speedway.
Current series point leader Gary Wright closed to within four car-lengths at the midway point, but Montgomery worked through lapped traffic masterfully over the final rounds to take the checkered flag with nearly a straightaway advantage aboard the Wesmar-powered Cooper Racing Enterprises No. 23x Maxim.
Montgomery started the feature from the front row outside as Toby Brown led the field to the green flag after charging from eighth to second in his heat race. The duo battled wheel-to-wheel the opening half-lap before Montgomery edged into the lead in turns three and four.
Fourth-starter Wright rode the top around Brown for second on the second circuit, with Terry Gray and Travis Rilat chasing the lead trio in the early stages.
Montgomery slipped away to a half straightaway advantage by the time lapped traffic came into play on the 10th round. Working through dense lapped traffic, Wright closed the gap on Montgomery and appeared ready to mount a challenge by the 15th round.
Montgomery was up to the task however, slicing through traffic with ease and racing to the stripe unchallenged to capture his second career ASCS National Tour triumph. Wright extended his current series point lead to 108 markers by crossing the stripe in second, with Brown posting his second consecutive third place finish.
Defending series champion Rilat battled past Gray to snare fourth, with Gray rounding out the top five. Marshall Skinner advanced five positions to take the checkered flag in sixth, just ahead of Zach Chappell and Darren Stewart. Sixteenth-starter Ernie Ainsworth made an impressive charge toward the front, getting as far as fourth before a lapped car slowed his progress in the final rounds. Ainsworth settled for ninth, with Tim Crawley completing the top ten.
Making his O'Reilly ASCS National Tour debut, 16-year-old Dex Eaton was the only driver among the 20-car feature field not running at the checkered flag, as he pulled to the infield after 18 laps.
Gray, Wright and Montgomery topped heat race action for the 25-car field, with Cody Branchcomb winning the 12-lap B Feature.
The caution flew on just two occasions during the night, the first for Dewayne Prince's stalled mount in turn one in the second heat, with the other caution appearing when Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., and J.P. Bailey tangled entering turn one on the opening round of the third heat.
Natalie Sather scratched for the evening after a turn one tumble in hot laps. Although uninjured, Sather's mount was damaged beyond repair for the evening.
