TULSA, Okla. (July 19, 2004) - With the 12th Annual COMP Cams ASCS Speedweek in the books, the teams of the O'Reilly American Sprint Car Series National Tour presented by Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores and Classic Trailers enjoy a few days of rest before resuming action this Saturday night at Missouri's West Plains Motor Speedway.
Saturday night's card will mark the third consecutive year that the nation's premier touring 360-ci Sprint Car series has invaded the 3/8-mile semi-banked red clay oval. Three-time series champion Tim Crawley of Mabelvale, AR, who scored three victories en route to his first Speedweek title, has found the West Plains oval to his liking over the past two years, racing to victory lane on both occasions.
Crawley will be joined by a host of top contenders, including current series point leader Gary Wright of Hooks, TX, and defending champion Travis Rilat of Forney, TX. Wright enters Saturday's showdown just 24 points ahead of Rilat, with 2001 series champion Zach Chappell of Talala, OK, in third.
1992 series champion Garry Lee Maier of Cimarron, KS, enters the weekend fourth in points, with Darren Stewart of Bixby, OK, rounding out the top five. Toby Brown of Carthage, MO, is sixth in points, with leading Brodix Rookie of the Year contender A.G. Rains (West Memphis, AR) in seventh. Fellow Rookie of the Year contenders Sam Hafertepe, Jr. (Sunnyvale, TX), Jimmy Taylor (Oklahoma City, OK) and Natalie Sather (Fargo, ND) complete the current top ten.
Saturday night's card, the 22nd stop on the 2004 O'Reilly ASCS National Tour, gets under way at 8:00 p.m. West Plains Motor Speedway is located six miles east of West Plains on US 63, then south. For more information, contact the track at 417-257-2112.
The event originally scheduled for this Friday night at North Central Arkansas Speedway in Yellville, AR, has been cancelled and will not be rescheduled.
After this Saturday night's event at West Plains, action resumes the following Friday night, July 30, as Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores kicks off its annual fund-raising efforts for the Children's Miracle Network at Oklahoma City's State Fair Speedway. From Oklahoma City, the series moves on to Joplin 66 Speedway on Saturday night, July 31.
The 2004 O'Reilly ASCS National Tour presented by Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores and Classic Trailers consists of nearly 40 nights of racing at 20 different tracks throughout Arkansas, Iowa, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas.
