Adams Takes USCS Riverside Win
TRAVELERS REST, SC - Kenny Adams of Malabar, FL grabbed the lead on lap two, and led the rest of the way to win the 30-lap United Sprint Car Series Outlaw Thunder 30-lap main event Friday night at Riverside Speedway in Travelers Rest, SC. Driving the Goodson Farms Shaw/Ott, Adams held off Terry Gray of Bartlett, TN for the victory.
Gray finished second in the Goodson Farms/Wendy's Maxim/Wesmar to stay on top of the USCS National Point Standings. Gray leads Adams by 16 points. Adams leads Curt Michael of Ocean View, DE by eight points in the USCS Dirt Series points chase, with Gray in third spot, 14 points behind Michael.
Scott Young of Mooresville, NC drove the Andy Stapp Racing Services J&J/Chrisco to a third-place finish, with fourth going to Bryce Wrenn of Lexington, SC in the Stainless Fabricators Hench/Gaerte. Phil Mott of Hinsdale, NY started 16th and finished fifth in the Ron's Smoke Shop J&J/Campell.
Mott shared the Huggins Cams Hard Charger of the Race Award with Josh Weller of Mertztown, PA, who started 19th and finished eighth in the Wave Tech J&J/HG.
Tom Winegardner Jr. of Pierson, FL took the sixth spot in the Snap On Tools J&J/WRP, and Butch Pendergrass of Winston-Salem, NC came back from an early race tangle to finish seventh in the Pro Life Maxim/Harp. Randy Helton of Palmetto, GA was ninth in the Helton Transmissions Maxim/ERI, and Jeremy Scott of Franklin, GA rounded out the top ten in the Vortex Bar and Grill Pro Lite/June Bug.
Young took the lead from the pole position at the start of the race, beating Danny Martin Jr. of Sarasota, FL into the first turn. Adams came up from the third starting spot to take the lead by making an inside move on Young in turn four on lap two.
The first caution flag of the race came out on lap five when Brian Thomas of Auburn, GA nosed his Main Auto Parts Avenger/Broome into the front straightaway wall while running in the fourth spot.
Martin charged up to second spot on lap six, driving his Martin Structures, Inc. Schnee/ZRE past Young. Martin charged just a little bit too hard on lap eight when he got collected under caution for a spin in turn three involving Red Stauffer of Winter Park, FL, Pendergrass, and Chris Hill of Wedowee, AL.
Pendergrass was able to restart from the back of the pack, but Martin, Stauffer, and Hill were done for the night.
Adams led Gray and the hard charging Michael down for the restart. Michael started his Phillips Garage J&J/H&G from the ninth starting hole. Young dropped back to fourth, and Johnny Bridges of Cherryville, NC moved up to fifth from the eighth starting spot in the Bridges Motorsports J&J/Hampshire.
At the halfway point, it was Adams leading Gray through heavy traffic, but Gray had to make some bold moves to stay with the leader. Young had moved back around Michael for the third spot on lap 12, Bridges rode in the fifth spot, followed by Wrenn, Winegardner, and Mott. Bridges pulled to the infield on lap 23 with brake problems, and was followed in by Michael on lap 24.
The third and final caution flag of the race came out on lap 26 when Scott Young of Woodland, AL stalled his K&S Auto Transport Eagle/Gaerte on the front straightaway. Adams was able to hold off Gray in the five lap dash to the finish.
It was a "Clean Sweep" for Adams, as the "Malabar Missile" also won the six-lap Air Flow Research Power Dash, and the third eight-lap heat race. Young (NC), and Martin won heats one and two respectively. Weller won the eight-lap Consolation Race.
The next event for the USCS Outlaw Thunder Tour will be Saturday night at I-20 Speedway in Batesburg, SC. For more information about the USCS, visit the series web site at www.uscsracing.com. <pre> 30-LAP FEATURE FINISH
