USCS Asphalt Thunder Tour Ready for Motor Mile Speedway in Radford, Va on Saturday Night
FAYETTEVILLE, GA - The United Sprint Car Series Asphalt Thunder Tour heads to the Motor Mile Speedway in Radford, VA on Saturday night for its third event of the 2004 season. The 1,300 pound, 700 horsepower USCS Asphalt Thunder winged outlaw sprint cars are pound-for-pound the most powerful short track racing cars in the world.
During qualifications, the USCS Asphalt Thunder winged outlaw sprint cars are expected to turn the fastest laps ever recorded on the .416-mile Motor Mile Speedway. NASCAR Legend and USCS Co-owner Ernie Irvan will be the Grand Marshal for the event, and will be signing autographs, meeting and greeting the race fans from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
The USCS drivers include the defending and three-time USCS National Champion Terry Gray of Bartlett, TN, and the defending USCS Asphalt Thunder Champion Kenny Adams of Malabar, FL. Also on the entry list will be Doug Berryman of Mansfield, OH, who won the USCS Asphalt Thunder season opener in Braselton, GA on March 27.
Along with Berryman, the USCS pavement specialist headed to Motor Mile Speedway include Jim Raptis of Marietta, GA, Ted Williams of Atlanta, GA, Brad Davis of Rutherfordton, NC, Joe Rebman of Mansfield, OH, Frank Neill of Vickery, OH, and top USCS Asphalt Thunder rookie driver Troy DeCaire of Tampa, FL.
USCS is the only winged outlaw sprint car series in the country that competes on both dirt and asphalt short tracks, and has both pavement specialists and drivers that compete on both surfaces.
Adams and Gray run both asphalt and dirt, along with Butch Pendergrass of Winston-Salem, NC, Ben Bassinger of Salisbury, NC, Bill Moore of Denver, NC, Doug Gold of Concord, NC, Johnny Bridges of Cherryville, NC, and Chad Allum of Kannapolis, NC.
A trio of Florida dirt track driving "Young Guns" have established themselves in the top ten of the USCS National points chase. Danny Martin Jr. of Sarasota, FL, Tom Winegardner Jr. of Pierson, FL and R.J. Johnson of Wesley Chapel, FL have decided to give the pavement a try at Motor Mile Speedway on Saturday night in an effort to move up the National point standings.
Martin, an 18-year-old high school Senior, is third in National points, Winegardner is fifth in National points, and R.J. Johnson is the leading National Rookie of the Year candidate, and is seventh in National USCS points.
Along with the USCS Asphalt Thunder winged outlaw sprint cars, the Motor Mile Speedway Late Model Trucks, Limited Sportsmen, Pure Stocks, and Mini Stocks will also be in action. The Pit Gate opens at 1:30 p.m., and the Grandstand Gates open at 3 p.m. There will be practice from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., with qualifying set for 5 p.m., and racing scheduled for 7 p.m.
In addition to time trials, the USCS Asphalt Thunder winged outlaw sprint cars will compete in the six-lap Air Flow Research Power Dash that will put the top six finishers from Friday night's main event at Hickory Motor Speedway in Hickory, NC against each other. That will be followed by eight-lap Heat Races, a Consolation Race, and the 40-lap Feature Race.
