Florida teams do well - Terry "the Bartlett Bandit" Gray steals the green in USCS "BAMA" Nationals at Green Valley
Glencoe, Alabama - The "Bartlett Bandit" Terry Gray from Bartlett, Tennessee driving his own Wendy's/Goodson Farms sponsored # 10 Maxim struck again. This time Gray stole all the green from Green Valley while winning his seventh United Sprint Car Series main event of the season in the opening round of the two day USCS "BAMA" Sprint Car Nationals on Friday night at the 4/10 mile clay Green Valley Speedway oval.
Gray started cashing in by setting a new all time GVS track record of 13.280 seconds, besting Kenny Adams old 13.492 and picking up the $100 fast time award . He then continued his quest for cash by winning his heat race, placing him on the pole next to Adams for the 20 lap main event. When the green flag waved for the main event Gray jumped into the lead and an all out battle ensued with Adams who hails from Malabar, Florida for the right to the winner's spoils in the GVS victory lane.
The pair, who share twenty USCS wins between them in 2003, raced bumper to bumper and side by side for the next eighteen laps, never more than a car length apart. Both of the veteran open wheel dare devils made daring move after daring move thru lapped traffic trying to gain the advantage. It was quite a spectacle. Just two to four car lengths back for the entire race was Jim Raptis from Marietta, Georgia. Raptis, who looked almost as much "on the ragged edge of disaster" as the lead duo, was looking for the error that didn't happen to steal the victory from the two USCS past champions.
Raptis' luck changed on lap nineteen and so did Adams'. As the trio entered turn one, smoke and a ball of fire puffed from the Goodson Farms/Putnam County Speedway/ Got Milk?/ Hodgetel #4a Shaw Racing car Adams was piloting as the engine expired, therefore leaving Raptis' red #77 Engine Research, Inc. Maxim car in second place followed by East Bay Raceway points leader, Johnny Gilbertson from Dover, Florida in third and moving Chris Hill from Wedowee, Alabama who started fifteenth, up to fourth. Sixteen year old rookie Ohio sprint car racer Ryan Meyers rounded out the talented top five.
1997 USCS Champion, Red Stauffer from Winter Park, Florida lead the next five in sixth followed by seventeen year old Danny "Hammer" Martin, Jr. from Sarasota, Florida www.hammermartin.com seventh after starting sixteenth, nineteen year old Tom Winegarner, Jr. from Pierson, Florida in eighth, Scott Cramer from Ohio, in ninth and Tom Winegardner, Sr. also from Pierson, Florida rounded out the top ten. Hammer Martin is sponsored by www.eFloridaTrafficSchool.com , www.putnamcountyspeedway.com, and www.duifla.com.
Heats were won by Gray, Adams, and the impressive young gun, Ryan Meyers who is the NRA Sprint Invader "Rookie of the Year". The Airflow Research 6 car / 6 lap Power Dash shootout was won by Adams. The Huggins Cams Hardcharger Award went to Hill for his gallant charge from fifteenth to fourth using the bottom of the track. The KSE "Outstanding Driving Performance "Award for the evening went to Myers for his top five drive from ninth as well as the Hart Racing/USCS top rookie driver of the night award.
