WARD WINS RAIN-SHORTENED O'REILLY USCS CROSSVILLE RUN
CROSSVILLE, TN - Mike Ward of Memphis, TN drove the AMC Maxim/McCarver to his third O'Reilly United Sprint Car Series win of the season Friday night, in the rain-shortened feature race at Crossville's Raceway USA. Ward took the lead on the opening lap from his outside front row starting spot, and held it until a wreck and rain brought a red flag out on lap 13.
K&N Filters Pole Award winner Darren Stewart of Bixby, OK finished second in the Sparks Construction Eagle/Ostrich, and the 21-year-old driver was also the SpeedMart Young Gun of the Race for drivers under the age of 25.
The O'Reilly USCS National points leader Kenny Adams of Malabar, FL took the third spot in the Milk Movers, Inc. Shaw/Ott. Seventeen-year-old Ricky Stenhouse Jr. of Olive Branch, MS started 18th and charged to a fourth-place finish to earn the Huggins Cams Hard Charger of the Race Award.
Mike Senecal of Palmetto, FL had his best O'Reilly USCS finish of the season with a fifth-place effort in the Rodeway Inn Maxim/Humphrey. Another SpeedMart Young Gun, 15-year-old Hunter Schuerenberg of Sikeston, MO was sixth in the Minor's Harley-Davidson Maxim/Foxco.
The defending and four-time O'Reilly USCS National Champion Terry Gray of Bartlett, TN finished seventh in the C&B Mushrooms/Wendy's Maxim/Wesmar. Mike McElya of Bartlett, TN drove the Pyles Paving J&J/Sikes to an eighth-place finish.
Shane Nelson of Chattanooga, TN was the Robison Racing Products Rookie of the Race with a ninth-place finish in the Nelson Racing Shaw/Slobuilt, and Bryan Eckley of Tampa, FL rounded out the top ten in the Eckley Racing Maxim/Ott.
Ward and Stewart were battling for the lead when the red flag came out on lap 14 when Brian Maddox, who was running third, flipped in turn four. His Crawford Tire Service Buckley/Ott ended up on its tail against the fence. Maddox was uninjured, and earned the Weld Racing Hard Luck Award.
While the crash site was cleared, a light rain shower dampened the racing surface just enough to prevent further action. Crossville's Raceway USA owner Ed Dover and O'Reilly USCS officials agreed to call the race complete with 13 laps in the books.
In preliminary action, Adams won the six-lap Air Flow Research Power Dash, and the ButlerBuilt 10-lap second heat race. McElya won the Engler Machine and Tool first 10-lap heat race, and Gray won the Koolbeans Trophies third 10-lap heat race. Matt Tiffany of Daytona Beach, FL won the 12-lap B-Main in the Independent Printing Shaw/Ott.
The next event for the O'Reilly USCS will be a National and Mid-South Thunder Tour points race on Saturday night at Thunderhill Raceway in Summertown, TN.
