CROSSVILLE, TN - Terry Gray of Bartlett, TN picked up his fifth win of the 2004 United Sprint Car Series season on Friday night with a close win over Kenny Adams of Malabar, FL at Crossville's Raceway USA. The two "Top Guns" of the United Sprint Car Series brought the crowd to their feet at the checkered flag of the 30-lap main event with a side-by-side finish.
Gray took the lead at the start of the race, and led all 30 laps in his Goodson Farms/Wendy's Maxim/Wesmar, but Adams made a late race charge, and almost beat Gray off the fourth turn coming down for the checkered flag. With Gray running the high line, the "Malabar Missile" took his Goodson Farms Shaw/Ott to the bottom groove in turn three.
Adams looked like he had made the winning pass, but the "Bartlett Bullet" had the momentum to take the win by a half car-length.
Danny Martin Jr. of Sarasota, FL claimed the third spot in the Martin Structures, Inc. Schnee/ZRE, and Jeremy Scott of Franklin, GA was fourth in the Vortex Bar and Grill Pro Lite/June Bug. Justin Collett of Townsend, DE made his debut with USCS a successful one, as the 18-year-old driver rounded out the top five in the Collett & Sons Welding Maxim/Kriner.
Brice Wrenn of Lexington, Sc finished sixth in the Stainless Fabricators Hench/Gaerte, and Tom Winegardner Jr. of Pierson, FL was seventh in the Snap-On Tools J&J/WRP. Scott Christian of Valliant, OK brought the Southern States Rail Service Stealth/Christian home in the eighth spot.
Kelly Glass of Jonesboro, TN was ninth in the Raptor Race Cars J&J/Raptor. Glass started 15th and was the Huggins Race Cams Hard Charger of the Race. Skip Andrews of Huntsville, AL rounded out the top ten in the Five Points Plumbing Gambler/Swanke. R.J. Johnson of Decatur, TN finished 11th in the Leaf Race Wear/Pin Rings J&J/ZRE, and was the Rookie of the Race.
Brian Thomas of Auburn, GA escaped serious injury when he tangled up with Glass at the start of the first heat race, and barrel-rolled four times into first turn wheel fence. Thomas climbed out of his Main Auto Parts/Saligoe Avenger/Broome Performance under his own power, but he was transported to a local hospital, treated and released with multiple bumps and bruises. Thomas was awarded the Weld Racing Hard Luck Award recipient.
Gray won the first 10-lap heat race, and Christian took the second heat. Gray made it a "clean sweep" of the evening's action that was delayed two and a half hours by rain, by winning the six-lap Air Flow Research Power Dash.
The USCS Outlaw Thunder Tour now moves to Cherokee Super Speedway in Gaffney, SC on Saturday night.
