RC Roper Gallops to USA Sprints Victory at Hendry County Speedway!
The USA Sprints Posse made thier return to Hendry County Speedway with great anticipation because there had been 4 different Winners in 5 events in 2004. It was anyones guess as to would come out on top this very chilly Winter night in Clewiston Florida. The drivers arrived to find a Track that would be a challenge not only because it was only the second visit there but also because it was hard and slick but fairly smooth. The crew Chiefs were hard at work as soon as the cars entered the pits examining the surface and contemplating the set-ups that would be used. This would play a very important factor and the key to Victory.
Heat Race # 1 action began with Mike Davis Jr. # 3 "The Kid" and David "Skeeter" Kelly #12 lining up on the front row in front of Scott "Rock & Roll Rocchio #16 and "Tiny" Tim George # 1. Skeeter shot out in front at the drop of the green followed by George and Scott Rocchio. Andy Kelly was starting back in the pack and would have to hustle to secure a good starting spot in the Main. Tim tried Skeeter a few times but could not get the forward bite off the corners to make the pass. Andy Kelly did indeed hustle his car and made it to 3rd but ran out of time. David Kelly #12 drove a nice race and was followed by Tim George # 1, Andy Kelly # 11, Ron Armstrong # 56, Scott Rocchio # 16 and Mike Davis Jr. # 3.
Heat Race # 2 saw RC Roper "The Racin Cowboy" # 92 and John "Party Time" Cinkota # 45 make up the front row with Bob "The Arrow" Parrow # 24 and Sean "Zippy" Namor # 10n. As the cars made thier way around turn # 3 Flagman Don Vanacker waved the green flag and Roper blaster out of turn 4 to take John Cinkota down into turn 1. Roper's car was really hooked up and began to distance himself from the pack. Bob "Thunderfoot" Schaeffer who started dead last was really zinging that Budweiser car on the high side and thrilling the fans as he always does. Namor and Schaeffer had a good battle with Schaeffer making the pass stick on lap 5. Cinkota was running a very solid 2nd but had Schaeffer determined to take it. They battled for 3 laps but to no avail John kept his spot. Roper cruised home for the Win in front of John Cinkota #45, Bob Schaeffer #22, Sean Namor 10n, and Bob Parrow #24
The Main Event would see RC Roper # 92 draw the pole alongside David Kelly #12 with John Cinkota #45 and Tim George # 1 directly behind on the 2nd row. As the cars rocketed out of turn 4 Roper brought the field to the green and down into turn 1 with David Kelly right on his hip pocket. Skeeter tried in vain to get to the bottom but John Cinkota had other ideas. . Cinkota took advantage of his position and made his way into 2nd passing Kelly. Meanwhile Andy "Hammer Down" Kelly # 11 was in a heated battle trying to move forward. The Track had become very slick so finesse would play an important role the Drivers would need on the Tricky 1/4 mile Hendry County Surface. Bob Schaeffer, Tim George along with Andy Kelly were engaged in an all out war as they continually battled back and forth relentlessly. for postions 4rd, 5th and 6th.
Back up front The "Cowboy" stretched his lead to 12 car lengths before the caution flew on lap12 for the # 24 of Bob Parrow who spun in turn 4. When the race was restarted Roper again asserted himself and moved away from the pack. John Cinkota was running a very solid 2nd with Andy Kelly, Bob Schaeffer Tim George and David Kelly all in a pack and battling for positions back and forth. Andy Kelly finally in his never say die attitude got by Cinkota with 2 laps to go. Roper would cruise home for the Win lapping all but the top 5 cars and make the 5th different Winner in 6 races so far in the 2004 Southern Thunder Tour. Scott Steffe would Win the Colley Racing Equipment "Mechanic of the Race" award to the Winning Crew Chief. Andy Kelly came home 2nd and also Won the KSE Racing products "Hard Charger" award. He was followed by John Cinkota, Bob Schaeffer, Tim George and David Kelly in 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th. Sean "Zippy" Namor drove a nice race to bring home 7th with Ron "Happy" Armstrong, Scott Rocchio and Bob Parrow rounding out the top 10.
The next race for the USA Sprints Southern Thunder Tour will be at Thundercross Motorsports Park in Okeechobee Florida Saturday night April 10th @ 7pm. Andy Kelly has the points lead with Tim George, John Cinkota, Bob Schaeffer and RC Roper rounding out the top 5.
