Wright Rules O'Reilly ASCS Debut at US 36 Raceway
CAMERON, Mo. (July 22, 2005) -- Gary Wright moved one step closer to his 100th career feature victory in O'Reilly American Sprint Car Series National Tour presented by Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores competition by topping Friday night's 25-lap feature in the series debut at US 36 Raceway.
Wright raced past early pacesetter Tim Newman on the eighth round then charged to his third consecutive series win in a row aboard the Wesmar-powered Southwest Express/The Shop/Richwood Construction No. 9 Maxim. It marked Wright's eighth ASCS National Tour victory of the season and 98th of his career.
While Wright gridded the feature field inside the second row, it was North Dakota's Natalie Sather leading the way to the green flag after racing from fourth to top the evening's opening heat race. When the green flag flew however, outside front row starter Newman gunned into the lead with Wright quickly racing into second.
Newman and Wright paced the early rounds in front of Sather, with sixth-starter Darren Stewart making a quick move up to fourth. Stewart bicycled in turn two on the third circuit however, and slipped to tenth after making the save.
Lapped traffic came into play after just a handful of laps and Wright turned up the heat on Newman. Wright's pressure paid off as he charged by on the high side exiting turn four on the eighth lap for what proved to be the race-winning move.
The defending series champion and current point leader, Wright meticulously navigated his way through heavy lapped traffic until the race's first caution flew after 16 rounds for Stewart, who had climbed back up to seventh before his right rear tire launched into the darkness off turn four. As the field checked up, Sather was tagged and spun in turn three, thus surrendering the third position.
After a red flag two laps later for Sam Hafertepe, Jr., and fourth-running Mitchell Moore, who flipped simultaneously without injury in turn two, Wright used a pair of lapped cars separating himself from his pursuers to cruise to the checkered flag unabated.
After starting 19th, Jesse Hockett had climbed to sixth by the lap 18 stoppage, then made a late charge to snare the runner-up position. Chris Morgan's strong drive from eleventh culminated with a third-place finish, with Kerry Grabill and O'Reilly Winged Outlaw Warriors rep Frank Brown rounding out the top five.
Local racer Jim Cameron crossed the stripe sixth after running amongst the top five most of the way, with 20th-starter Mike Trent, 18th-starter Jon Corbin, 16th-starter Toby Chapman and Bryan Grimes completing the top ten.
Newman took the checkered flag in second but was disqualified in post-race technical inspection for use of illegal cylinder heads.
Sather, Newman, Wright and Rex Combs topped heat race action for the combined ASCS/WOW 35-car field. Tony Bruce, Jr., fought off Hockett's early bids for the lead then a late surge from Jason Martin to win the first 12-lap "B" Main, with Chapman racing to the checkered flag in the second "B" Main.
