TULSA, Okla. (September 29, 2003) - The O'Reilly American Sprint Car Series National Tour presented by Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores and United Trailers makes its first ever appearance at the new 1/3-mile high-banked Delta Bowl Speedway in Tunica, MS, this Saturday night as a tough field of drivers will vie for the $5,000 winner's share.
Travis Rilat of Forney, TX, leads the ASCS National guns into Saturday's event atop the gumbo clay oval, holding a 56 point lead over Hooks, TX, veteran Gary Wright in the championship points battle with just two nights of racing remaining after the ASCS Delta Bowl debut.
Rilat has posted 34 top-ten finishes in 38 events on the O'Reilly ASCS National trail this year, including 28 top-fives and five feature wins aboard the F&J Construction/Archer Motorsports/Haulmark Trailers Eagle. A former Rookie of the Year, not only with ASCS but the All-Stars and NCRA as well, Rilat is just three races away from recording his first series championship, which would be worth $20,000 in point fund money.
Wright has notched a series' best fourteen feature triumphs this season in ASCS National competition, extending his career total to 75. A recent DNF at Batesville proved costly in Wright's pursuit of the championship aboard the Salina-powered Southwest Express/The Shop/Richwood Construction Maxim, with little time remaining to close the gap.
2001 series champion Zach Chappell of Talala, OK, is still within striking distance as well, just 88 points off the pace. Chappell has piloted the Carbone-powered Champco Concrete Construction Maxim to a pair of feature wins this season while consistently finishing near the front.
After leading the points chase much of the season, leading Brodix Rookie of the Year candidate Darren Stewart of Bixby, OK, enters this Saturday's event fourth in points, with Sapulpa, OK, driver Cody Branchcomb rounding out the current top five.
Other top ASCS drivers expected to be on hand include Toby Brown, three-time series champion Tim Crawley, Jason Martin, Jimmy Taylor and A.G. Rains.
A number of top Memphis-area regular competitors will try to keep the $5,000 winner's purse close to home, including Mike Ward, who recently claimed his first ASCS victory of the year, Eddie Gallagher, Jan Howard, Dale Howard, Marshall Skinner and Paul Sides.
Saturday night's racing action is slated to take the green flag at 8:00 p.m. Delta Bowl Speedway is located just east of Tunica, MS, one mile north of State Road 4 on State Road 3. For additional information, contact the track at 901-487-0204.
