HANOVER, PA, 7/9/04 -- A beautiful Friday night is something Trail-Way Speedway hasn't seen in a very long time. With no rain in the forecast, 358 sprint car racing came roaring back to the Hanover, PA 1/3 mile track in hopes of adding a new name to the growing list of winners.
Ken Berwager turned that hope into a reality Friday night picking up his first career 358 win. Berwager, who started on the outside pole, followed behind early race leader Rick Horn for the first few laps. Horn and Berwager raced nose to tail before Berwager took the lead away from Horn on the eighth lap.
A caution on the eighteenth lap put the pressure on Berwager , as Horn and Billy Dietrich were given the chance to gain momentum and attempt to pass Berwager on the restart.
"When that yellow flag came out I felt like I was running out of fuel," Berwager commented "I'm wore out! I feel like an old man!" he went on to say when being asked how he felt after winning the feature event.
Horn maintained the second position followed by Billy Dietrich taking the third position. Folowing Dietrich was the 2003 points champion Brad McClelland and Neal Amspacher rounding out the top five. Jon Keller, Mike Lehman, Bob Howard, Jeff Young, and Troy Becker completed the top ten.
Heat winners for the twenty-three sprint cars in attendance were Amspacher, Keller and Dan Dietrich.
A speechless Tom Slusser rolled into victory lane after taking the 20-lap feature race. This was Slusser's first career victory. Slusser won the thundercar race by inches over Ron Shultz.
Slusser traded the first position with Marshall McMullen several times during the early portion of the race. McMullen quickly fell in line behind Slusser and held the second position until a caution was brought out on a restart involving himself and Mike Walls who were racing for the second position.
Following Slusser across the line was Shultz and Mark Shorb, Fred Lloyd, and Sam Gallagher completing the top five.
Heat winners for the thundercars were Randy Zechman and Mark Shorb.
Mike Herman picked up the street stock feature win after leading the last four laps of the fifteen-lap race. Todd Miller, who captured the lead on the eighth lap, was racing with Danny Beard for the lead and both were forced to start in the rear giving Herman the lead.
Randy May led the first seven laps of the race.
Following Herman across the line was Kevin Sprague, Chris Holston, Ted Forsythe and Robert Stough completing the top five.
