HANOVER, PA, 6/222/03 - In the growing 358 sprint division at Trail-Way Speedway, prior racing experience at the Hanover oval is not required. But it certainly doesn't hurt.

Pasadena, Maryland's Jeff Young started on the front row and led wire-to-wire in claiming his second straight win in Sunday's 20-lap Coor's Light 358 Sprint feature. It couldn't have come at a better time, with double points on the line and some bad racing luck which took out points leader Billy Dietrich on the first and second turns of lap ten.

"I have a lot of laps on this track, but so do they," said Young when asked about the gamesmanship which transpired between the three leaders (Young, Brad McClelland, and Kyle Purks) during the final caution with two laps to go, "I knew they weren't coming up beside me to wish me luck."

All three drivers have come out of Trail-Way's micro-sprint divisions and moved up to the 358's. McClelland challenged to the end and finished second, but Purks got out of shape exiting the fourth turn on the next-to-last lap and crossed sixth. Brian Eichelberger, Dale Hammaker (who came from 20th starting spot), and Frankie Herr (who started 14th) completed the top five. Seventh through tenth were Brandon Grandstaff, Jon Keller, Tom Fraschetta, and Judd Shepard.

"We've been starting up front, but I know it won't last, so I thought we'd better take advantage of it while we can," said Young after becoming the season's first repeat winner in the 358 division, "This is my third race with Charlie Singer, and he's been helping so much. I also want to thank my dad and Randy Ruff, who have been doing a great job."

Young's final margin of victory was 1.03 seconds over McClelland, who advanced to second from his sixth starting spot by lap three and ran there the rest of the way.

Billy Dietrich went off on the wrecker after making contact with another car and damaging the front end of his car on lap ten. Aaron Long was running third when he slowed on the backstretch of the 18th lap. At the same time, Brian Allman got sideways against the outside wall and Mike Bittinger lost a wheel entering turn three, bringing out the final caution of the race.

Scott Tate brought out the event's only red flag when he flipped along the outside wall of turn four after the leaders crossed the line to complete the second lap. He was uninjured.

Heats for the 31 "358" sprinters on hand were won by McClelland, Dan Dietrich, and Long. Brian Allman won the consolation event.

Abbottstown's Bryan Wagaman slipped under brother Craig in the third and fourth turns of the 19th lap and went on to claim his second win of the year in the 20 lap thundercar feature.

Wagaman started ninth and was running fourth by the time Mike Zeigler Sr. grabbed the lead from Nat Tuckey on lap five. Zeigler led the next 12 laps before yielding to Craig Wagaman. Craig only led lap 18 before yielding to his brother and settled for second. Zeigler Sr., Tuckey and Mark Shorb completed the top five.

Heats for the 27 thundercars were won by Mark Shorb, Mike Fletcher, and Craig Wagaman. Bobby Rudisill won the consolation event.

Mike Herman started tenth and led the last four laps, giving him his first win of the season in the 15 lap make-up feature from the rained-out May 25th street stock feature. Robert Stough led the first six laps of the race before Chris Holston took over for the next five laps. On lap 12 Holston dropped off the pace giving the lead to Herman. Holston continued to fade and ended up a lap down. Stough, Ted Forsythe, make up feature winner Mike Kress, and Randy Crunkilton completed the top five. Crunkilton crossed sideways while spinning at the end.

Finishing behind Kress in the makeup feature were Herman, Ron Myers Jr., Holston, Jamie Bigelow Jr.

Heats for the 28 street stocks were won by Don Owens, Randy Crunkilton, and Robert Bare. Danny Beard won the consolation event.

Trail-Way swings back into action with a complete program of 358 Sprints, Thundercars and Street Stocks again Friday night, June 27th beginning at 7:30 p.m. It will be Auto Racing Club of Hagerstown Night, with two dollars off admission for all card carrying club members, and Scout Night with all boy and girl scouts in uniform admitted free.
