Daggett Dazzles ASCS Sprints on Dirt at Merritt

MERRITT, Mich. (June 17, 2006) - Dustin Daggett notched his first career American Sprint Car Series feature win in spectacular fashion by charging from 17th to capture the lead on the 23rd circuit en route to Engine Pro ASCS Sprints on Dirt presented by Victor Reinz victory lane in Saturday night's 25-lap feature at Merritt Speedway.

Daggett advanced from the "B" Main and ultimately passed Steve Irwin on a late restart to take command then pulled away over the final three laps to secure the victory aboard the Daggett Racing No. 85 Maxim, marking the 35th-career Sprints on Dirt triumph for the 23-year-old hotshoe.

"This was an awesome race for us," Daggett commented in victory lane. "We struggled in the heat race and just changed a couple of things before the "B" Main, and we really didn't touch the car after that. This is great to win here before heading back out on the road (with the ASCS National Tour)."J Irwin and Tim Lowe started on the front row of the 25-lap feature event.JIrwin led the field into turn one as Gregg Dalman turned under Lowe to take away the second position through turns one and two. On lap three, Chris Webster moved past Lowe for the third spot off turn four and began moving in on Dalman.

Meanwhile, the race for fourth on back heated up with Lowe, Atkins, and the battle for the point lead between Ken Mackey and Dain Naida. Mackey and Naida ran side-by-side for several laps before Mackey pulled ahead on lap eight.

Lapped traffic came into play on lap nine and Irwin was able to move past the slower cars. But Dalman was held up, allowing Irwin to open up his advantage. This allowed Webster to pull right up to Dalman's back bumper when the caution flag appeared for Joel Hummel's spin in turn four.

Irwin pulled away on the restart, with Atkins mounting a challenge upon Lowe for fourth on the restart and taking the position on the 13th lap.JMeanwhile, Daggett was already up to the eighth spot and was the lone racer on the top side of the track. At the halfway point, Daggett had climbed to sixth and by the 17th round had followed Atkins into the top five. One lap later Daggett disposed of Atkins before charging by Webster for third on the 19th lap.

Irwin, Dalman and Daggett were racing with one another when the caution flag appeared for Ryan Grubaugh's spin in turn four on the 23rd lap, setting up a three-lap dash to the finish.

Daggett wasted no time disposing of Dalman on the high side of turns one and two then raced around Irwin in turns three and four to take command.

From there, Daggett checked out and took the checkered flag comfortably ahead of Irwin, Dalman, Atkins and Webster. Defending series champion Tim Norman crossed the stripe sixth, with Ken Mackey, John Gall, Tim Lowe and Joe Bares completing the top ten.J Dalman, Atkins and Webster won the heat race events, with Daggett topping the "B" Feature.
