Mann Wins ASCS Sprints on Dirt Super Race Day at Owendale
OWENDALE, Mich. -- Brett Mann from Goshen, Indiana won Saturday's Engine Pro ASCS Sprints on Dirt presented by Victor Reinz feature event during Super Race Day at Owendale Speedway. Mann avoided a first lap pile up, battled with Ben Rutan, and blasted through lapped traffic to secure his first feature win of the 2008 season and extend his point lead.
"I couldn't believe I missed the crash at the start," said Mann. "(Norman) was up in the air and I closed my eyes because I thought he was going to take off the top wing. It was great racing with someone like Ben Rutan that you can run side by side like we did. Its been a tough year, but this makes it worth it."
After the Giddy Up Color Loco redraw Louie Carufel and Ben Rutan started on the front row for the 25-Lap main event. After a ragged start Carufel got sideways in turn two. Tim Norman had nowhere to go and made contact with Carufel and spun sideways in front of the entire field. Gary Fast made contact with Norman, sending Norman twisting in the air but somehow not turning over, and also collected Ryan Grubaugh to bring out the red flag. All three drivers were able to make the restart while Carufel was penalized for jumping the initial start.
This moved Mann up to the front row with Rutan. After the start Mann and Rutan raced three laps wheel to wheel cleanly before Rutan slipped in turns one and two on the cushion and Mann drove away on the bottom.JRutan kept pace with Mann while Grubaugh and Norman were making a frantic charge through the field.
After a mid-race caution flag for Carufel spinning off the track in turns three and four Mann pulled away at the restart. With just a handful of laps to go Mann encountered heavy lapped traffic and allowed Rutan to close in. Mann then countered with a brilliant three wide pass through traffic in turns three and four to open up distance between himself and Rutan to secure the victory. Rutan made a daring pass in turns three and four the very next lap of the same lapped cars, but it was too late to catch Mann. Rutan held on for second after encounter problems with his right rear tire just before the start of the feature and had to put on a tire that was not the same air pressure as the previous one. Norman charge from the back of the pack was rewarded with a third place finish while Dain Naida and Gregg Dalman rounded out the top five.
Rutan and Carufel won the heat race events. Naida won the Total Seal/Gaerte Engines fast car dash.
